Charles J. Arnold scoffs at groundhog forecasts and trusts the robin’s sign of spring. He recalls seeing a robin in his yard and muses on April weather, then notes Major Martin H. Shute’s Portland Maine promotion and Greencastle Rotary’s upcoming talk by Dean R. G. McCutchan.
Feb 4 Hoover faces confirmation of Charles I Hughes as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Senators and the Judiciary Committee signal a cautious path with a likely full committee vote next Monday. The nomination moves toward the office in the middle of next week.
Mel Browning about 50 from 'rsville was recaptured after escaping the ha State farm. He was brought back to the arm today by Gilbert Snyder at the farm.
Mrs. Una J. Marlatt of Kenosha Wisconsin files suit to foreclose a chattel mortgage on Mrs. Marie Zaharakos east Washington street tea room furnishings. The action seeks $1750 including interest costs and attorney fees, with foreclosure and sale of the goods.
President Oxnam delivered a chapel speech to start the new semester at the University. He spoke on The Wishbone of an Ostrich, comparing procrastination parasitism and plumosity to student and faculty habits, urging students to do the work and rely on themselves.
President Oxnam announced a $100 prize contest for the best paper on My Personal Reactions to the Simpson Lectures. First place wins $50, plus $25 for second and third. Dr. Olson speaks on Some Validities and Realities as chapel schedules adjust to 10:40 start times. Lectures in Meharry Hall include a 4:30 Wednesday address and 7:00 Thursday evening appearance.
C W Herod, son of Mr and Mrs M O Herod, was awarded the Putnam County annual Purdue University scholarship. He is a Purdue junior and will finish next year after consideration of several applicants. The county hospital board announced it will admit county patients free of charge for ward or room services, including county farm and pauper cases. The Art Metal Co of Indianapolis won a contract to supply clerk and auditor office furnishings totaling 1688. Road 48 north of Clover dale is sought to be turned back to the county for maintenance as part of the county road system.
First Christian Church officers and their spouses host boards from Indiana Christian congregations on February 6 in Greencastle. Speaker F E Smith of Indianapolis will discuss the Pension Fund for Christian Churches, planned to start January 1930, with 2800 preachers and churches contributing a portion of salary to fund older ministers. There are 716 congregations in Indiana with about 163 000 members.
County commissioners purchased five trucks for road maintenance after bids from six truck firms. Three Internationals, one Ford, and one Chevrolet were bought for $1,162 per International, $720.49 for the Ford, and $764 for the Chevrolet, to be paid from gasoline tax funds.
Greencastle hosts the Kedroff Quartet a renowned Russian vocal ensemble on its third American tour at Meharry Hall Wednesday night. The group formed in 1897 and is praised for unity of interpretation and the highest achievement of Russian vocal music. Their American debut was January 7 1928 at Town Hall New York and they quickly gained fame in Europe and the United States.
Twenty years ago in Greencastle Miss Harry Goldberg entertained friends at a cards session. Mrs. H. A. Gobin traveled to Indianapolis to view the St Gaudens Art Exhibit and Miss Angie Godwin led a revival at Wall Street Methodist Church. Farmers in the southern part form an organization to protect game on their land.
Mrs G Bromley Oxnam wife of DePauw university president will return to Greencastle two weeks from today Dr Oxnam announced in chapel this morning She is recovering from an operation for acute appendicitis performed in a Los Angeles hospital January 6 February 18
The Grasselli Chemical company of Delaware sues William Wetz, Greencastle grocer, for $600 to cover a $400 note alleged unpaid plus costs. H. P. Radley of the Indiana Underwriters' Association inspected Greencastle buildings today to fix fire insurance rates.
The forecast calls for snow and colder conditions on Wednesday with south regions seeing general fall, while the north stays mostly cloudy and the southeast portion turns colder.
Washington Indiana February 4 John B Waggoner former trustee of Washington township Daviess county was jailed today charged with embezzlement He allegedly pocketed eight thousand dollars in money checks warrants and other property belonging to others The alleged financial juggling was uncovered weeks ago by State board of accounts examiners who found irregularities totaling nearly five hundred twenty five thousand dollars in his accounts as township trustee
Major Martyn H. Shute of the Maine National Guard, senior instructor of the 103rd Infantry, is nominated for promotion to lieutenant colonel. A West Point graduate 1906, he has served in the Philippines, in the United States, and recently with the Army War College in Washington. His headquarters have moved from Augusta to Portland.
The first annual state Legion Bowling Tourney in Indianapolis invites posts to enter. Deadline is midnight February 5. event is February 9 at the Elks Club. 5 man team event sanctioned by the American Bowling Congress with silver trophies medals and cash prizes. The Greencastle Chamber of Commerce voted to send ex mayor C M Lample and Wilbur Donner as delegates to Washington D C this week to press Greencastle's bid for a Veterans Hospital site. The hearing Friday before the Mobilization Board could bring a city gain with possible Veterans Bureau relocation. Downtown parking was also discussed and referred to the merchants committee for a plan.
Dr Otto A Noland, newly announced candidate for Secretary of State, broke his left lower arm when his left hand struck the concrete as he tried to stop a fall while pushing his car in a Spencer garage. He said the accident frees time for his political campaign despite dental practice disruption.
The DePauw University swimming team schedules a meet with the Chicago Y M C A at the DePauw pool tonight, following the basketball game versus Indiana Central. It marks the fourth meet of the year for the Old Gold paddlers who beat Anderson Y M C A and lost to Purdue and Indiana swimmers.
