The notice announces the 1929 Indiana State Checker Tourney to be held in Portland on February 18 and 19. The blast includes humorous local notes and greetings from Howard Treat, a West Point cadet, plus episodic community observations.
William W. Brothers of Greencastle died suddenly at his home on Thursday afternoon at about 3 o'clock from heart disease. He was 79, a former Madison township farmer who later ran a livery stable in Greencastle. He leaves a widow and three daughters Mrs Walter Dills of Muskogee Oklahoma Mrs William Hanna of Raccoon and Miss Jessie Brothers. Funeral services are set for Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at the home.
Franklin County authorities search for D. L. Julius a Nickel Plate Railway employee missing from his home after his wrecked car is found a mile west. Julius 45 years old and described as six feet tall about 140 pounds. Family fears foul play as anxiety rises following his two weeks pay windfall.
William W. Carter aged 61, a longtime haberdasher and proprietor near Monument Circle in Indianapolis, died suddenly of acute indigestion at his home. His father served as a former U S revenue agent in the city.
Three Indianapolis youths Joseph Carmichael 21 Hubert Hamilton 23 and William Cosgrove 19 are jailed on conspiracy charges after allegedly plotting to rob a local margarine factory and a South Bend theater. Detectives say the plan included a stop at Standard Nut Margarine Co and a theater on Michigan Street where a sister worked as a cashier.
James Meadows 55 of Paragon was found dead this morning in a truck five miles southwest of Martinsville Indiana. He is believed to have shot himself a revolver was found in his lap Survivors include his widow and two sons.
Indiana fires caused a loss of 6,874,263 during the last fiscal year per the State Fire Marshal. There were 4,777 known fires with flying sparks as the leading cause at 1,789, plus 377 defective flues 513 overheated stoves 203 defective wiring 107 matches. Dwelling losses reached 3,352 and twenty eight churches were among the burned properties.
Ruth McConnell fled her unwanted suitor in a dramatic cross country ordeal reaching San Francisco before a man identified as John Alden. Kenneth Coulter of Rochester, N Y, is engaged to her and under sanatorium care. Dr. David O Meeker is described as the flying John Alden. The Danville Republican notes her step mother was Mrs Rachel King of Danville and that McConnell is a niece of Bishop Hughes.
Crawfordsville resident Louis Wilhelm Otto age 64 prominent citizen and longtime postmaster died at his home on south Walnut street after a four year illness. He had just been re appointed to the postmaster post by the U S Postal department. He married Mary B Keegan on Oct 29 1899 and left three children Amanda Marie Frederick Keegan and Elsa Marie. Funeral service set for Saturday at 2 pm at home with Rev. Guy Carpenter of First Methodist Church. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Weather forecast shows unsettled conditions tonight with snow developing in the northern area. Rain is likely in the south on Saturday, changing to snow flurries at night. Temperatures rise slightly in the south tonight and drop again Saturday into the night.
Evansville health officials report 47 deaths from influenza and pneumonia in three weeks. A double funeral is planned Saturday for Mrs. Anna B. Winiger, 68, and her grandson Leonard Winiger, 9 months, as the community mourns the outbreak.
Theodore Lane a leading Putnam County businessman died suddenly at his Cloverdale home. Mrs. Frank Roberts and daughters Vera and Vivian visited Mr and Mrs M E Chaptain of Roachdale. John McCabe and family near Morton spent Sunday with James I Nelson. Mr and Mrs Nathan Call of Roachdale visited relatives here.
William Morton Hicks age 90 died at his home on the National Road east of Mt. Meridian Friday at 2 15 am from influenza pneumonia. His wife is critically ill with influenza. They would have celebrated seventy years of marriage in October. Surviving are seven children: Mrs Sarah Broad Street Coatesville Mrs Tilman Ruark Stilesville H H Hicks Marion township Mrs William Coble Stilesville Everett Hicks Stilesville Thomas Hicks at home and Edgar Hicks of Stilesville. Dr Leora Hicks died in 1918 at an army camp. Interment in Stilesville cemetery.
Benjamin Franklin Whittington of Clinton Indiana was shot in the left breast during a liquor running hijacking in Clinton County. He died in Indianapolis after his companions Urban Pope and Laurence Donahey drove his body to the police. Pope and Donahey, both runners, confessed to the crime and were held without bond. Whittington’s wife, Mrs. Whittington, fainted on learning of the tragedy.
Funeral services for Samuel McCoy, prominent Cloverdal resident who died Thursday morning, will be held Saturday at 1 30 PM at the Church of Christ in Cloverdale. Rev. O A Trinkle of Indianapolis will officiate. Interment will follow in Cloverdale.
Mrs. Margaret L. Hubbard of Cloverdale died at her home Thursday night at 11 after a two week influenza illness and heart trouble. She was 81, widow of Perry L. Hubbard who died on the railroad tracks at Cloverdale years ago. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Samuel McClure and four grandchildren. Funeral is set for Sunday at the Church of Christ in Cloverdale.
A Brown of Greencastle, president of the Indiana Bankers Association, will preside at the mid winter meeting and banquet to be held January 28 at the Claypool hotel Indianapolis. The program features M B Watkins and Charles T Evans as speakers with topics on trust business living and inter bank relations.
James L. Bradley assistant director of the state automobile license division donated a pint of blood to help Miss Doris Casler during a critical operation. Secretary Fifield promoted Bradley to director of the auto license division, moving Mark W. Rhoades to head the state securities commission. Bradley, from Edinburg, Indiana, is married with one child and has served in the secretary of state's office since 1921. Another note says William Blanchard remains at home with influenza.
The Indiana Supreme Court overruled Governor Ed Jacksons pardon of Dr E S Shumaker superintendent of the Indiana Anti Saloon League and ordered a 60 day contempt sentence to begin at the Indiana State Farm The ruling drew two dissenting justices The Dry League leaders custody set for tomorrow and federal habeas corpus action expected to follow
O Q L Goodlander resigns as manager of Vonderschmit Amusement Enterprises with effect today. H J Arnold, former Vonritz theater Bedford manager, becomes general manager of Greencastle Crawfordsville and Bedford venues. Arnold plans to base at Jordaville as work requires. Walter Bidwell remains Greencastle house manager. Goodlander to organize Capital City Amusement Company with Louise Powell Artists. Bloomington Indiana Theatre remodeling follows.
William F. Orrel infant son of Mr and Mrs Walter Orrel of Limedale died at home after four weeks illness at 10 20 Friday morning. He leaves parents two brothers and one sister. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
