Fixed Christmas observance date in Greencastle

The Greencastle area announces Christmas will be celebrated on Tuesday December 25 after a dispute among the Chamber of Commerce the Greencastle Credit Association and the Ministerial Association The date is set for all organizations to cooperate in the holiday observance Cars decoration rules warn motorists to avoid collisions through January 1 1929.

Coeds to Give Annual Christmas Party for Greencastle Children

A W S and W C A organize the annual Christmas party for Greencastle school children at the gymnasium on Saturday December 15 from 2 to 4 pm. Each girl will provide a gift and entertainment for one child. First four grades from three grade schools and Maple Heights invited. Entertainment and games in the gym. Miss Ethel Morris and Dorothy Rutters will read Christmas stories before gifts are distributed.

Van Cleave Funeral Held for Indiana Preacher

Last rites for Rev. B. T. Van Cleave were held at the Methodist Church with Rev. C. Howard Taylor officiating. A well known Indiana pastor for 25 years, he retired in 1906 and moved to this city. Pall-bearers included J. E. Courtney, R. W. Shafer, Frank Butler, Charles Goodenough, Henry Werneke, and Mr. Van Cleave. Interment followed in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Small Pox Breaks Out in Putnam County

Health authorities report several cases of small pox in Bainbridge and Floyd township with multiple homes quarantined. The Floyd township outbreak includes the home of Chester Ruark near Fillmore and cases in Homer Lawson Griswold families. Vaccination efforts are under way to prevent a broader outbreak.

Contralto Edna Bowles to Broadcast With Quartet

Miss Edna Bowles contralto will perform with pianist Ver non Sheffield and the University String Quartet in a concert broadcast next Sunday at 3 45 p m from Meharry Hall via station WFBM Indianapolis The quartet features Roland Leach Emerson VanCleave Leslie McCollum and Bowles.

Rockville Cafe Sold To Former Local Man

The Rockville Cafe on the west side of the square was sold Saturday to Oscar Kinsey of Morristown who takes possession. Kinsey has four years in Morristown's restaurant business and will move his wife and daughter here. He is the son of William Kinsey and brother of Mrs. Charles Crafton. the Uselmans will not immediately return to business. The cafe, successor to the Carlisle grocery and restaurant, is in the Carlisle building. Kinsey previously co owned the West Side Cafe in Rockville. His wife is formerly Miss Zella O Hair, daughter of Mrs. Emma O Hair.

Attorneys for Day Leader File Answer Brief in High Court

The brief argues Governor Jackson acted for the welfare of Indiana in pardoning Dr. Edward Shumaker and says the governor’s pardon was legal, opposing Attorney General Gilliam’s claim that the court should compel Shumaker to serve 60 days. It asserts pardoning power rests with the executive branch and criticizes the AG’s prosecution as overzealous.

The forecast calls for mostly clear skies with some cloudiness. Temperatures rise and warmer air moves in tonight, with continued mild conditions into Friday.

Fall taxes totaled in Putnam County reach nearly half a million

A report by County Treasurer Alva Lisby shows 483 884 51 collected in full fall taxes. Greencastle led with the largest payment and Bainbridge the smallest. Warren Township paid the least while Greencastle again led. Several delinquencies were reported and uncollected taxes will go to a tax collector for a fee. Distribution of the funds will be made soon by the County Auditor.

Bruner Named President of Greencastle Kiwanis Club

Rev. B. H. Bruner, pastor of the First Christian Church, was unanimously elected president of the Greencastle Kiwanis Club at its annual noon meeting. Other officers were chosen on the nominating committee's recommendations including Ralph Hufford J. B. McCurry and Harry Williams.

Rotary Club Dines with District Governor Worth Pepple

Worth Pepple the district governor of Rotary Michigan City spoke on business ethics during his annual club visit. He urged businessmen to conduct transactions on a high plane while accompanying Frank McNutt Crawfordsville group chairman. The dinner took place in the Christian Church dining room at 6 30.

Miss Helen Hathaway Visits Crawfordsville

From the Files of The Herald 20 years ago today Miss Helen Hathaway was visiting in Crawfordsville. The report notes Eva Hood of Cloverdale and Otis Maxwell of Terre Haute wed at the bride’s parents home by Rev. W E Gill. James Ingram died at his daughter’s home on Hanna street last night.

Tuberculosis Cause and Discovery by Koch in 1882

Tuberculosis is caused by the tubercle bacillus discovered in 1882 by German physician G Robert Koch. Since then scientists in laboratories have learned many characteristics of this micro-organism. The bacilli are found in the sputum of those with the disease and sometimes in pus from affected organs.

Local Teachers Laud Schools After Site Visit

Southern Indiana Superintendents Research Club members toured the local schools on Wednesday, praising the facilities including the new Second Ward building. They plan continued study of history in grades four to six and will report further at the March 1929 meeting in Blacknell. Dr. Velorus Martz and Dr. W. W. Kidnapped New York Boy Slain by Abductor

The body of seven year old Joseph Storelli, kidnapped November 17 from New York's east side, was found in a frost‑bound New Jersey swamp. Police traced the killer, Peter Kudzinowski, who confessed to abducting Storelli and murdering him in a nearby field after a Detroit arrest revealed the motive and method.

Former Pastor Harlan Cory Dies in California Home

Rev W L Raphael reports the death of Dr Harlan Page Cory D D at Monte Vista Grove Pasadena on Thursday November 22. He served as pastor of the local Presbyterian Church in 1890 1891 and last visited during the 1923 General Assembly in Indianapolis. The Corys celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past year. A recent influenza illness weakened his heart and he died after strain while washing his car. Mrs Cory can be reached via her son Lowrie D at 912 B Ave Coronado California.

West and Whiting Nominees Sent to Senate for Confirmation

On December 6 President Coolidge sent the nominations of Roy O. West of Illinois for Secretary of Interior and William F. Whiting of Massachusetts for Secretary of Commerce to the Senate for confirmation. Both appointments occurred during the Congressional recess. Insurgent and Democrat coalition leaders announced a fight against West over his ties to power interests.
