Letter from Dudley L. Cartwright warns readers that a published engagement of Blondie Boopadoop to Dagwood Bumstead is a fabrication. He asserts Dagwood Bumstead Sr. denies the union and asks for a clear correction if printed.
The hearing on the Danville traction company petition to abandon the Danville line is rescheduled to September 3 in Danville morning session. The original date of August 26 is replaced by the new date.
Local items report Mrs. Elizabeth Sears visiting relatives in Indianapolis. G Will Conklin is seriously ill at his home on South Locust Street. Mrs. Orva Keller underwent tonsil surgery at Putnam County Hospital. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Stoner west of Limedale. Rev. Query will preach Friday at Brick Chapel M B Church. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hardy return from a motor trip to Youngstown and Cleveland Ohio. Mrs. Charles Cooper visits Crawfordsville. Mr. and Mrs. Ward Mayhall are due home from a trip to the East and Canada. Virginia Denny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Denny, has a broken left arm. The Wingfield and Pickens couples return from a motor trip to Michigan and Canada. Clarence Hazlett of Cleveland visits Mrs. S A Hazelett who is ill on East Washington Street. Mrs. Ed Dieterick and daughter Joanne, guests of Mr. and Mrs. C C Hurst, return to Indianapolis. Diederick formerly was Miss Phoebe Connerly.
B. H. Bruner notes rising air mindedness during a Kansas City trip visiting Lambert Field and Municipal Airport. He observes large runways and thriving air travel, cites 80 000 July passengers, and highlights government support for regional airports including Green Castle. He warns Lexington Mo risks stagnation without progress on rail and air links.
A 65 year old farmer, William T. Vice, was found dead by suicide in a hog house on his farm south of Coatsville. Ill health and farm worries were blamed. He left a widow and five married children. Willis Jackson discovered the body.
Society announces the marriage of William T. O'Mullane a U S Marine stationed in Brooklyn aboard the U S Colorado to Miss Dorothy Etta Sullivan of Brooklyn. The ceremony occurred in New York City on July 12. O'Mullane is a Cloverdale High School graduate class of 1924 and has served about two years.
Mrs A V Thomas hosted a party Monday afternoon for girls in honor of her granddaughter Lorna Constance Thomas celebrating her sixth birthday. Mrs Russell Thomas assisted with games and refreshments as guests received yellow crepe dolls as favors. Attending were Lorna and Bettie Jean Thomas Baraba Bain Margery Hall Velma Ada Martina June O'Hair Dorthy Wysong Helen Pace Dorthy Flint Martha Ellen Ferrand Fowler Maxine Bettie Ferrand Terre Haute.
Five new entries join Ira Hall Terre Haute and Howdy Wilcox Indianapolis for Indiana second night auto race at Jungle Park Speedway Rockville Aug 23. Dick Kroger Indianapolis debuts a new 16 valve car with Mark Billman Ray Meyers WH Bunker Decatur HL and Dick Frost also listed. A 15 mile feature and three five wire events are scheduled as engineers install extra lights to complement twenty four lights used last week.
Lee Shipman about 50 was arrested Thursday night by Officer George Knauer after residents reported an attempted entry on West Washington street. He had a half pint of liquor and burglary tools, was jailed in Putnam County, and arraigned for public intoxication. He later admitted his name as Shipman. He previously served a jail sentence in December 1927 on intoxication.
From the files of the NERALD dated August 20 1910 shows the Elks lodge rooms in the H B London building nearing completion after a $5000 remodeling. The Beta Theta Pi fraternity plans a new home site with vans completed. Albert Bowman of Los Angeles heads home by car with Roscoe Daggy and Dr C F Overstreet and son Ralph to Denver. The W S Burris family of Coverdale visit Greencastle.
A westward hike by three Indianapolis youths ends when Deputy Sheriff Alva Bryan stops a car near their camp on the national road southeast of Greencastle. The boys, Danial Carlisle 16 Russell Williams 10 and Eugene Purdy 12, are taken to Putnam County jail and later returned to Indianapolis with the Purdy father.
Jenny Fowler written by Mrs Margaret Weymouth Jackson released by Bobbs Merrill company. Jackson longHar Spencer resident now in Indianapolis, daughter of George Weymouth editor of Farm Life. Articles by Fowler appeared in the magazine.
A Danville golf tournament will be held at the Greencastle Country Club on Sunday. The event features a thirty six hole handicap with eighteen holes in the morning and eighteen in the afternoon. Prizes include a driving contest and awards for low net low gross and other categories.
Cloverdale residents, led by Mi ami Mere Henry Coffman, plan a two week Prairie Farmer's Tour through the northwestern United States and Canada. They depart Chicago on Saturday to visit Glacier National Park, Alberta, Yosemite National Park, and take a short Pacific Ocean boat trip.
Morton Methodist Church advertises a Sunday August 24, 1930 program with Sunday school at 10 a.m. followed by an annual picnic at Bakers camp. No evening service that day. service moves to the following Sunday. T. J. Cotton is pastor. John McCammack and Robert Wallace, Jefferson township, will teach in Schneider schools for 1950 31 year.
The forecast calls for fair conditions tonight and Saturday with little change in temperature. Skies remain clear with light winds and comfortable highs, no precipitation expected through the period.
Miss Mary Smith of 258 Gano Street Providence asks Mayor W L Denman to help trace her mother Martha Yount's family. She believes Martha's mother was Mary, born about 95 years ago, with grandfather Paul Yount linked to Greencastle or Coatesville. A Greencastle paper from 1868 is in her possession. Local elders recall Younts living in south Greencastle.
Sheriff Edward Eiteljorge warned this morning that a man in Greencastle has been attempting to pass counterfeit ten dollar bills bearing a Kansas City National Bank imprint. Several merchants reported the suspect in their shops but none accepted the bills.
In Putnam circuit court J. Gillspie sues Edward Chew, trustee of Washington township, for 58 dollars alleged medical attendance fees for the township poor. The report notes community members attending a farewell for Mrs. Crosby at the Christian Church with detailed names among attendees.
The article notes Greencastle gains a top modern landing field through federal aid, paying only for land estimated at about 6000 dollars while the government covers land conditioning, towers, and lighting. The 50 acre airport sits within 200 acres set aside, with potential for park use or sale later. The city may later operate it as a municipal field, while awaiting government caretaking.
