Greencastle residents anticipate the Quincy picnic with crowds, refreshment stands, and attractions planned for the grounds. Train No. 11 adds coaches to handle arriving visitors at 8:25 AM while speakers and rides like the Ferris wheel and merry go round will entertain attendees.
Indianapolis receipts show hogs totaling 11 000 with 8 000 remaining from Tuesday and 3 000 cattle and 700 calves with 700 sheep. Hog prices opened 25 cents lower with general sales from 15.25 to 15.50 and top at 15.75. Heavyweights 14.75 to 15.00, pigs 15.50. Local buyers purchased 4 000. outsiders were inactive. Cattle steady to strong, calves and sheep 50 cents lower.
Mr and Mrs Ross Tappy of Terre Haute visited Mr and Mrs O L Keiser Saturday. Several families including Syesters from Brazil and Linton plus Herringtons of Moberly were guests of D W Syester and wife. Various locals hosted visitors from Cory Cloverdale Center Point Bowling Green and Terre Haute. A Christian Church Women's Union Section 2 meets Thursday at 2 30 with Miss Hallie Browning East Washington Street. Section 8 meets with Mrs John Dietrich at the same time five miles east of town. All members urged to attend.
Mr and Mrs James L Randel plan a trip to Hammond Indiana this week to visit Dr and Mrs George Cook and their children for a couple of weeks. Mr Randel has been ill but is greatly improved and now able to go out.
Community members from Lena and nearby towns exchange visits and attend events. Names include Downs, Doris, Crooks, Eaglesfield, Hendrix, Williams, Parson, Sparks, Linn, Neton, Dickerson, Vinzant, Finican, Cooksie, Fritts, Shoptaugh, Cox, Murphy, Humphrey, Parr, Bauman, Coombs, and others with trips to Carbon Indianapolis Terre Haute Greencastle Fontainette Centerpoint and Campbell circus.
Mrs Myrtle Storm and sons Lester and Herold Storm spent Sunday with Sanford Applegate and family near Coatesville. John Carter and family moved to near Fillmore. Tra Denny and wife will occupy Carter’s farm. Mrs Amy Buis spent Friday night with William Newman and family. Isaac Christie and family visited the Shades. Boy Scouts camping on Big Walnut this week. Mrs Morris Goodwine visited Mrs Fred Hunter and family. Several attended the Stilesville picnic. Miss Geneva Carter visited Miss Nellie Heavin. Cheerful Country Club met with Mrs Mary Hunter. Friends visited Wildwood Beach on Big Walnut. Ethridge Buss called to Roachdale for his father’s illness. Misses Roxie Cash and Lela Arnold visited Miss Ethel Ogle. Mr and Mrs Chas Bunten on extended motor trip to Illinois. Mr and Mrs Charley Moffett and family to return from Blue Bluffs vacation. Miss Gladys Clefton and Miss Gladys Cannon visiting Miss Vivian Baldwin near Limedale.
Deputy Sheriff Fred Lancaster was returned to the state reformatory at Jeffersonville this morning to serve a term of from two to five years for running away from the State Farm.
Indianapolis report notes the state board of tax commissioners applied horizontal increases to Shelby and Johnson counties, overruling local review boards. The Tut hill Kiper measure is portrayed as centralizing authority, with critics labeling it a fraud and fearing diminished court protections. Mrs Edward Lockwood formerly Miss Helen Montgomery of Indianapolis has died of malaria in Hong Kong. She is survived by her husband a brother George B Lockwood now in Washington D C and two children. The couple had been in China six years for Y M C A work and both attended DePauw University.
Jess Sutherlin and Charles Sutherlin, farmers near Morton, own a barrow hog weighing between 1300 and 1400 pounds. The animal is one of the region�s largest, and may be shown at the State Fair.
The Rotary Club held its luncheon at 12 15 today in the Christian church. Women of the church prepared and served excellent luncheons for Greencastle’s new organization impressing members with their adept service. Rev H C Clinvinger of Locust Street Methodist Church appears in the cast of the morttew talon.
Dr J A Throop believes an attempt was made to steal his automobile Tuesday night. He was awakened twice by noises at the garage and, after turning on house lights, the prowler fled.
Benton Review reports Lee W. Kelley of the Raub Grain Company Elevator left about 70 000 in gambling debts to Sawyer Grain Company of Chicago and McCardle Black Company of Indianapolis. Warren T. McCray, Indiana governor candidate, is named as a related figure amid denials of debt validity. Officials refuse payment, citing gambling debt status and potential political repercussions.
Mr Hall advised the company not to transfer grain cars to the Indianapolis firm after arrivals. McCardle Sr is father of C A McCardle of the McCardle Black Company, linking family to local business interests.
The Central Community Chautauqua in Cloverdale closed Tuesday night and organizers call it the best of its kind in town. Attendance at the final program was among the largest ever seen. A return for next season is likely. The grade teachers organization meeting postponed to next Wednesday at Mrs. F. E. Stratton’s home.
The Horticultural Society and Bee Keepers Association will hold their annual picnic on Monday August 15 on Mrs Laura Ammerman's lawn near Seminary street. The event includes a morning demonstration introducing fifteen pure Italian queens and a noon talk by Mr. Yost. In the afternoon Hon Frank N Wallace the state Entomologist will speak on the work of the State Entomologist. Election of officers will follow.
Mrs Warren G Harding wife of the Republican presidential candidate will be guest at the Indiana State Fair. A 60 member committee will organize a Hoosier welcome with events at the fair including harness races and a public reception. She will attend the Hippodrome and horse show and tie ribbons to winners in the women’s saddle horse contest.
The Putnam County board of equalization voted unanimously to reject the State Tax Board horizon tal increase of 1919 and certify back to the state board the original assessments as equalized by the county. The board listened to appeals from the Putnam County farmers association seeking removal of the increase and declared the state board action unfair and unjust. Mrs. L. D. Dodd visiting Williamsport, Rev J. D. Dodd preaching at Cannan M E church Coatesville, and Greencastle Country Club results with Matt Murphy winning a week end tournament.
A passerby named Pierre Richard found a woman in a fit on the Quai d'Orsay and carried her to safety. She recovered thanked him, then departed. Later he discovered his pocketbook containing 159 francs was missing.
