A letter to the Banner Times describes the U S Army hospital corps training school, its welcome for new recruits, and daily routines. It covers obedience, cleanliness, fishing on the lake, early wake times, litter drills, and recitations on medical topics. N E Laipacker signs as the author.
A 1898 Fort McPherson letter details a group’s rail journey from Indianapolis to Atlanta via Louisville and Nashville with stops at Chattanooga. They report 6000 troops on base, 500 acre camp, brick buildings, a 200 seat dining hall, water works, and days spent watching wheat harvests, melons, and Spanish officers in prison while awaiting orders to Tampa.

Jno O Connell, accused of drinking that day, resisted arrest at Don Rowland's saloon Saturday night. Officer Parker struck him with a cane, inflicting a serious head wound exposing skull three inches. O Connell was taken to jail then home as his condition improved by Sunday morning.
Several Greencastle colored boys enlist in the regular army and depart for Indianapolis for reception. Names listed include Jesse James, Bob Robinson, Jno. Fain, Ed Taylor and Clarence Simmons. Also two boxes with 94 shoe boxes of provisions for Co. H and Bloomington troops sent to Camp Alger to aid the soldiers. Local ladies coordinated the donation effort.
Captain Wilber Starr of Company I writes from Camp Alger Virginia to refute reports of a universal army canteen supplying beer and whisky. He argues officers do not run bars, soldiers drink less, attend church more, and that sensational accounts from Camp Thomas are exaggerated. He pledges high moral standards and challenges home critics to verify claims.
Mrs Michael Curtain of Plainfield said a month of treatment by her family physician failed to help a lung condition described as consumption. Members of the Masonic organization and their families enjoyed a Friday night reception in adjoining rooms at the Masonic hall. The decor featured flags flowers and is described as beautifully arranged. Rev W H Wise spoke on Masonry and its benefits before refreshments at 9 30.
Foel Stelton of Fern and Miss Mary Byer of Parke county wed in a court house ceremony officiated by Rev. Skrout. Stelton, a well known Putnam county resident, has many friends who wish him good fortune. An objection from a parent stirred drama before the ceremony but the couple's happiness prevailed.
A five week plus one day throat obstruction in Naoma Randell ended when a grain of corn was coughed up at 8:15. The Randell family kept the grain as a curious keepsake and celebrated the relief of the long distress.
John Oliver of Philadelphia recounts a severe illness with jaundiced skin and aching back. After three doctors gave up, he credits Electric Ritters for rapid improvement and says they saved his life, urging others to try them at 50 cents per bottle.

Public notices show the government seeking 200 million dollars with Greencastle posting notices and offering blanks at the post office. Postmaster Chapin reports all blanks issued and a Washington re-supply telegraphed. Local banks see strong interest with Central Bank indicating 100000 dollars in deposits likely to subscribe.
Rev D M Wood pastor of Centenary M E church in the city has been awarded the degree Doctor of Divinity by DePauw University. The honor comes unsolicited and recognizes his service as a trustee and his learning and success.
Desire to own a farm home draws buyers to fertile western Minnesota and South Dakota lands along the Chicago and North Western Railway. The area promises wealth from crops dairy and stock raising as rates and terms are advertised by W. B. Kniskern G. P. and T. A. in Chicago.
