A damaged report from Grove Park notes the Weld fair opening faced rain delays yet drew large crowds. The 2:15 pace and 2:30 trot are set for Friday with top horses like Dorothy C and Walnut Maid named. Additional entries boosted exhibits and schooling turnout slated for Saturday.
Hiram Fox, brother of Mrs. Al Stevens of Greeley, was struck and killed by a train at Evans while trying to retrieve his hat fallen on the track. The mishap occurred around 6:30 PM as he stooped near the depot. he died en route to a Denver hospital. Fox had recently worked for George Weediman of Greeley and lived with his sister. The engineer braked hard, but could not avert the collision. the body was taken to the coroner in Greeley.
D H Udall of Cornell University has arrived in Omaha to investigate a meningitis like disease affecting horses in Nebraska. The Union Pacific bond company arranged the visit. Udall will consult Nebraska and Kansas veterinarians and conduct extensive bacte riological and pathological work across Lincoln Manhattan and state officials. He has published veterinary articles and translated Froehner's General Surgery into English for veterinary use.
Fort Lupton reports the tomato crop nearly ruined due to frosts and ongoing cold wet weather. Growers fear earnings will be low this season, reversing last week’s hopeful prospect as frost damaged plants and poor conditions continued.
Judge Charles A. McCall will publish Harry G. Malnix’s investigation into Adams County allegedly corrupt officials. The six year probe found a $15,000 shortage, with fifteen officials implicated. Taxpayers delayed in backing a grand jury call until the shortage was confirmed. Mrs. G. G. Blake improves after illness in Johnstown.
District court in Colorado will open October 1 to hear if lumber men form a combination restraining trade. Denver dealers deny wrongdoing but admit associations exist and claim territory division aimed to preserve organizational integrity. Proceedings followed demurrer and motion rulings with a scheduled merits hearing.
Farmers in Johnstown began filling corn silos for dairy cattle at the densary. At J W Whowell farm a new cutting machine worth 750 dollars is praised as it handles cutting for all local silos. Nearby, several new silos have been built in the last 90 days and will be filled similarly. Ohioans visiting Kersey members Mr and Mrs Bellamy of Cleveland stay with George A Bellamy this week.
Chris Rugh a leading Greeley figure dies at 6 30 PM after a stroke of apoplexy at his home 1121 Tenth Street He was born December 22 1854 in Pennsylvania and came to Greeley in 1893 Survived by his widow one son five daughters two sisters three brothers and twelve grandchildren Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with many lodges represented His death follows a long record of church and civic involvement in Greeley.
Dr. D. D. Forward of Greeley received an invitation to join the American Academy of Political and Social Science. The academy, focusing on industrial issues, recently published two volumes on Industrial Competition and Combination and The Initiative Referendum and Recall. Officers are noted educators from the East and the academy publishes six volumes yearly. George L. Reed, president of the Boulder Creamery, Denver, visited LaSalle and examined his ranch south of town, run by Fred Allen, expressing satisfaction with the crop prospects.
Sneak thieves robbed homes in Greeley during fair week. C A Fitch at 1805 Eleventh avenue lost an overcoat hat gloves and a fountain pen in a window entry. Dr J A Weaver at Fourteenth street and Ninth avenue had silver, $8, a check, and a $200 note taken. the note was later found and returned. W S Gilbert, visiting his son at 1203 Ninth avenue, confronted a burglar who fled through a window. family silver was not taken. A Commercial Club meeting in Eaton Sept 24 features Attorney Reed and Jesse Hurlbut delivering talks.
Pauline McKenzie, daughter of a Colorado mine owner, smoked 300 cigarettes in 24 hours and is in Bellevue hospital psych ward. She arrived from Chicago with theatrical plans and adopted a boy at the St. Margaret hotel before surrendering him and continuing her spree.
Farmers around LaSalle started hauling beets to town with grinding likely to begin in three or four days. The community anticipates harvest progress as the campaign moves toward processing.
The United States Marine Band, formerly directed by John Philip Sousa, makes its first West tour stop in Greeley on Tuesday afternoon October 8. Manager Stevens of the Sterling theater reports the contract is closed with the band demanding a large guarantee but offering popular prices. The concert will start at 3 PM and local schools are urged to dismiss early to hear the performance.
A. E. Gipson of Caldwell Idaho visited Greeley Tuesday to greet old friends before returning home this morning. Gipson formerly lived here and was on a business trip. Mr and Mrs H T West, formerly of Greeley, remain in Gipson's home and are in good health. They send regards to Greeley friends.
Greeley women organize for physical education under Congregational church. Miss Mary E. Schenck to coach four classes starting next week with junior and high school girls followed by young and married women. Activities include folk dances drills and indoor basketball. Sessions set for Tuesday October 1 and Thursday evenings with times listed.
Funeral services for the four months old baby of J. Tellier were held at the home of Mrs. Hull on Tuesday. The infant, who died at birth, was cared for by Mrs. Hull. Interment followed at the local cemetery in Fort Lupton.
