Abraham Rehn, 19, son of Conrad Rehn, climbed a tree on his Weld county farm near Windsor to retrieve roosting doves. He carried birds in pockets and hands to keep them warm, slipped from a branch about twenty feet up, and broke his back bone. He died at St Luke's Hospital in Denver.
The Women of Woodcraft held a Friday afternoon meeting with a social session and refreshments. A volunteer committee was named to plan the next entertainment and luncheon, featuring music, a reading by Miss Aiva Mulvaney, and a five-person farce titled Borrowing.
A Weld county prohibition officers petition the county clerk protesting the proposed ticket on the official ballot. They claim nominees are not from the prohibition party and allege irregularities and insufficient signatures. A 10 oclock Saturday hearing will decide the protest and potential ballot placement.
A well dressed stranger, found on the verge of collapse from morphine and cocaine, is jailed by the sheriff and to be sent to Pueblo on his way east. He has a hypodermic needle and fifteen cents, and was headed toward relatives in Kansas after spending his money on drugs. The report labels dope fiends as warnings.
The Woman's Relief Corps held a Thursday afternoon social with a large turnout and enjoyable contests. Mrs. N D Bartholomew won a prize for recalling the longest shopping list, and two prizes were awarded for correctly guessing a patriotic quotation. A supper concluded the event.
Real estate firm Kinsella & Brown purchased forty city lots from Robert Steele for 20000 dollars. The main tract of twenty five lots sits at Fourteenth Avenue and Thirteenth Street, with fifteen additional scattered lots nearby. The buyers plan to plat streets grade gravel install water and sewer and prepare the land for building.
Five informations were filed in county court Monday against as many persons for bootlegging. Accused hail from Ault and Windsor. W T Schroeder of Windsor and John Schwartzkopf are charged with unlawfully disposing of spirits. Sam Curtis William Hodges and George Gusler face blind pig operations in Ault. All pleaded not guilty. Nine gallons of corn alcohol were seized. Trials set for October 27 28 and 29.
Merchants paying taxes and rents enjoy protection from peddlers, says Marshal Williams. An Italian offender was seized Saturday for house to house canvassing with cheap goods. He claimed orders only, but faced enforcement action. He reportedly paid $5 for a one day license after visiting the police magistrate on Friday night.
C E McGraw of Ault appeals against L N Priddy of Pierce after a September 28 trial before Justice W W Hart. A jury of three found for McGraw, awarding 235 29 dollars for a hotel contract dispute with Wing and Merraw named in the complaint for failing to meet specifications.
A southern state railroad conductor murdered by Black men last week was a cousin of J C Kendel a musical instructor at the Normal school. The alleged assailants were lynched on Saturday.
A coroner’s jury found Daniel Wilson died from scalding by pulp due to a burst cell door with a defective lock at the sugar factory. A night shift worker had reported the same door bursting earlier, but the inquest found no clear individual responsibility despite the company’s safety efforts.
Monday morning four intoxicated men were detained at the police station after heavy drinking. Frank Horne Warren Collier and Wm Smith each paid $10 plus costs. Red O Connor was booked for drunk and disorderly and later paid $20 and costs after a second offense.
The Union Ladies' Aid society of eighty members held an all day sewing event at two homes in Greeley on Wednesday October 7. Members sewed garments for a destitute east Greeley family and prepared sumptuous noontime dinners. On Thursday morning president Mrs H J Houston presented the mother with seventy ready to wear garments.
Mrs R J MecLucas hosted a dinner for about a dozen Women of Woodcraft members at 1218 Sixth Street. An elegant meal and bright floral table decor accompanied a lively visit among guests including Mesdames Shaffer Spencer Hopkins Adams Thompson Marsh Ling Bartholemew Baxter Rowe Christman Johnson.
Henry Hannah of 1218 Wighth street died this morning from diabetes aggravated by the shock of last Thursday’s auto accident. He was struck while crossing near the Unitarian church by Corolla Worley of Longmont. A compound fracture of the left leg preceded his death. Survived by wife. Remains to be taken to Ohio for burial.
One of the season’s most artful events featured a Normal kindergarten seniors party for faculty and juniors. The room resembled an autumn bower with leaf decor, leaf shaped menus, and sugared lights. The program included two solos by Professor Theo Fitz and Miss Frances Tobey recounting a Daudet story.
The prohibition ticket filed last Tuesday was ruled irregular by the county clerk and will not appear on the official ballot after a Saturday hearing at the courthouse. Witnesses stated they were qualified officers of the prohibition party and did not endorse the ticket.
William McCave filed in county court against F E B Stewart seeking possession of a city lot and 150 dollars for damages and rent.
Uriah Cheeney and his wife escaped serious harm when a party of tourists in three speeding autos struck their horse and buggy at Mason's crossing three miles north of town. The livery rig was demolished and the horse injured. the crash disrupted bystanders who reported the autos as from forty to fifty miles per hour. Police and county authorities were notified but the identity of the party remains unclear.
A massive Bryan rally drew sixty thousand listeners in Denver with 209 from Greeley. The afternoon event carried 1905 passengers, trains 104. About twenty thousand filled the auditorium for the 8 p m address as Bryan sought to quell a tumult and boost his cause in Colorado.
Thirteen new candidates were initiated at Oasis Lodge No 13 Daughters of Rebekah meeting. The degree staff will perform next Wednesday at the Elks hall. New robes, badges, and pink and green ribbons bearing Greeley Colo Oasis Lodge No 13 were used and displayed. Visiting Odd Fellows and Rebekahs will be hosted Monday through Wednesday at Ellis' hall.

Justice of the Peace Pressley, aged twenty, cast a Lincoln vote while with the fourth Iowa cavalry in Arkansas near Fort Smith. The polling site was the camp and votes were sent to Iowa. The captain ruled that service-made him eligible to vote.
Sunday morning storm left both electric light plants without power for a period. Wires were dead as crews of line men worked to repair the system throughout the day.
Prairie fire raged on the range near the 22 ranch about one hundred miles east of Greeley. Sparks from a train started the blaze near Pinneo on the Burlington and it spread north toward Merino, burning about twenty five miles. M B Gill and workers fought the flames with furrows and teams until the fire was extinguished, though worn out from the effort.
The Commercials beat Normal High 11 to 0 on Thursday afternoon. Harry Youngs suffered minor injuries as quarterback of the winning team. Starting lineups list Commercials and Normal High players with positions.
Rev. M. R. Kerr, formerly of Sandwich Massachusetts, has accepted the pastorate of the Unitarian church in this city and will begin duties December 1. Kerr, a New York native and Cornell Yale graduate, has extensive education work experience and authored Our Baby's Journal. He has six children and plans to settle in this city soon.
High school seniors enjoyed a Friday night gathering at Miss Lela Decker’s four miles northwest of town in a tally-ho ride. About thirty attendees played games and socialized, with sandwiches, pickles, cocoa, and waters served late.
