The Colorado Telephone Company lab group held its monthly meeting on October 31 in the district manager's office. Seven women employees arriving as ghosts joined with a lit jack-o-lantern cider doughnuts and pumpkin pie. They shared old fashioned ghost stories after refreshments, and the gathering ended around 10:30 pm.
Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus of Chicago, a leading clergyman, is reportedly the board’s choice for president of the State Agricultural College at Fort Collins. The board could raise the $5,000 salary paid to President Aylesworth, and Gunsaulus would lead if he consents. Some members question his lack of agricultural expertise, noting his career has centered on literary work.
Sheriff Ben Florance and Marshal Williams found two bicycles and a horse and buggy in a river jungle after a Sunday poker game on the opposite bank. Gamblers fled when officers approached, producing comic chaos as the horse and bike owners remain unclaimed.
The village reports a milder Halloween with eight special officers on duty. No arrests were made as crowds of white clad youths paraded Meeker field and minor property damage occurred. Coroner Macy conducted an inquest at Firestone near Lupton into the sudden death of 41 year old Mrs Lizzie Frickle wife of a Russian farmer who had a history of fainting spells after childbirth The bursting of the main artery from the heart caused death Dr Dorsey of Platteville assisted The widow leaves a husband six children including a four week old infant Funeral is set for this afternoon at Firestone.
The State Normal school announces new non-resident courses for teachers and principals to earn Normal diplomas without leaving their jobs. Many applications have been received. The program, overseen by the school, includes prescribed readings, content analysis, faculty discussions, thesis work, and oral and written exams with some residence requirements.
Nellie Theresa Rankin and Jason MacMillan wed in a double ceremony with Bertha Edith Rankin marrying Clayton MacMillan. The elaborate event drew 250 guests at the church and 150 at a later reception, with Rev. W. A. Philips officiating and among out of town attendees from Cedarville and Des Moines.
Miss Jeanette Senier hosted a six o clock dinner Wednesday for a small group of bachelor girl friends. A beautifully appointed dinner was served and the guests enjoyed music and a pleasant social evening.
Ed Jones aged 18 drew a knife on a Japanese man on the Thomas Nix ranch near Eaton Colorado after a dispute on a potato sorter. The Jap was cut but not seriously harmed and is recovering. Jones fled town as a warrant was issued.
Marshal Reger brought two prisoners from Haton on Friday night. They are Black men involved in the shooting incident. He claims the sugar factory at Haton drives the recent influx of African Americans. A Black man hires and unloads coke there, drawing workers from across the region. Eaton residents plan to petition factory management to hire a different worker class.
Dode Wykert’s livery barn at Severance burned to the ground last evening at 7 o’clock. With no water supply, stock and vehicles were saved but hay and grain losses mount near $200. The barn belonged to Jim Whitmore of Ault and insurance was only $500. a nearby telephone pole and wires were also damaged. Dode Wykert is connected to E L Kellogg of Greeley. A bucket brigade helped save the adjacent Schillig Lumber yard.
The Poudre Valley lodge L O O F thank the citizens of Greeley for hospitality during the Grand Lodge and Rebekah Assembly. Nearly one thousand were entertained though seven hundred rooms were unused due to bad weather. Gratitude extends to business leaders clubs fraternal orders and local papers for assistance and coverage.
Rev O W Gustafson marked his fortieth birthday with a surprise party planned by congregation members. Mr and Mrs Charles Lofgren hosted a supper at their home and the conspirators hid until the visit to their pastor. A purse was presented and Gustafson spoke briefly before the gathering enjoyed the evening.
Fort Morgan High defeated Greeley High 11 to 4 as Greeley’s better team failed to overcome Morgan’s breaks. Johnson’s long run and a kickoff punt set Morgan ahead, while Greeley capitalized on two field goals and a late pass. Local prep action includes Eaton vs Greeley on Meeker field and future games in Cheyenne and Loveland, with basketball plans and venue concerns noted.
Sarah Ellis Eddy, in Greeley on business, observed workers filling a street trench after laying water pipe. She asked a workman why water was poured in and was told it helps pack earth and compact soil so the street remains even. She thanked the worker and said learning comes from asking questions.
