Opening night at the Greeley carnival features seventeen attractions. Highlights include Charles Johnson the 100 foot high diver, the De Belle gymnasts, aerial troupers, and a London ghost show. Spectators praised the acts as the crowd grew larger each day.
Professor E B House of Colorado Agricultural College, son of Judge and Mrs E P House, amputated his own toe after a deep ax wound at Chambers lake. With no surgical help seventy miles away he sewed the severed toe and treated the second toe, then stayed with the field party. Rev OC F Elliott bought Rocky Point cottage in Estes Park.
The Tribune notes a batch of new Greeley publications aimed at promoting the county and city. Spud Book highlights potato industry while Glimpses of Greeley outlines city advantages, with Weld County data and fresh views. Demand grows as publishers and business leaders push reliable local literature eastward.
A July 1 update to rural carrier duties bans soliciting business and handling non prepaid mail on routes. Prepaid postage required for mailable items, except county newspapers to subscribers. Carriers may not carry liquor or accept hires, and must allow post office inspectors on routes. The second piece notes past city street grading in Greeley and projected five year urban improvements.
William Mayher reported a burglary at his lumber office occurring between Wednesday and Thursday. The thieves forced a window to gain entry, opened an unlocked safe, and removed about 70. No other damage was found beyond a small breakage to the money drawer.
Street Supervisor Milton Seaman has workers cutting down the grade of Ninth avenue between Ninth and Eleventh streets to bring it to the regular established level. The avenue is currently about a foot higher than the intended grade.
The hail storm damaged wheat and potatoes but left pockets of undamaged fields. Potatoes show delayed tops and uncertain yields while alfalfa and sugar beets appear to recover. hay and crop prospects remain cautiously positive. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dupree and their baby depart for San Diego to settle there.
Captain Hogarty was brought home with a broken leg from Zimmerman's after a hail storm. He was riding out from the hotel when the horse kicked, striking him while he attempted to shield the animals. A doctor at the hotel set the bone and he was moved by slow stages to Greeley Hospital for treatment.
