City councilors discuss progress on a fire alarm system with the street railway company. Petition filed for a new apartment house at Sixth Street and Ninth Avenue. Trinity Church to re roof with fire proof covering. ordinance drafted governing employment agencies.
Spider Kelly the famed pugilist arrives with his dog Fitzsimmons for a carnival at Symnasium in Old Academy hall. The event features three wrestling bouts and three boxing matches led by Sailor Young vs Julius Murphy for county honors.
The Weld county infant known as the incubator baby remains without official guardians. Dr. J. C. Carlson of Eaton holds provisional custody while the county court weighs whether the child stays with the Carlsons or goes to its father August Johnson who remarried after the mother's death. Testimony from interested women was heard and the case is under advisement.
Dr Henry 8 Curtis of Clark University will visit Greeley February 25 for a week as the Northern Colorado Teacher s association meets. He will address playground and child training topics at unions churches the Commercial club and various civic gatherings.
Mrs Laura Thompson hosted a Valentine gathering at 1701 Seventh Avenue on Tuesday evening. The decorated home featured red and white hearts and twenty guests attended. The Hearts game awarded first prize to Mrs Tedibaugh and consolation prize to Miss Sibbet, with refreshments served to close the cheerful evening.
Lucerne hosts a Friday evening basket social under the Farmers' union auspices inviting all residents. A pleasant time is anticipated as the event draws community participation and support.
John G. Reid of Denver, who has been quite ill, is in Greeley today. Reid is well known here.
John Papas a Greek man facing charges for threatening to kill Charles Lewis if he pursued Miss Lydia Boles was bound over to appear in Justice Pressly’s district court with a $400 bond. A letter Papas wrote to Lewis threatened to blow his head off if he did not stay away from Miss Boles, which Papas claimed was a joke.
Miss Helen Morgan hosted a Valentine birthday party at the Camfield on Tuesday afternoon. Twenty school friends attended for a festive celebration with decorations and a dining room dinner. The young hostess turned nine, and guests enjoyed a cheerful afternoon with cake and treats.
A special stop in Greeley is announced for an agricultural demonstration train arriving on February 20. Officials invite local farmers and students to attend and learn about new farming techniques and equipment.
The agricultural demonstration train, annual from the State Agricultural College and state railroads, stops in Greeley next Monday at eight for two hours. The public is invited to view exhibits on soils, animal husbandry, dairying, poultry, farm machinery and related farming topics with experts present to provide information. City leaders are urged to form a committee to welcome the train and show Greeley’s appreciation, aiming for favorable coverage in state papers.
This morning a message announced the death of Mrs. Parks mother of George and Will Parks of LaSalle. She died shortly after being summoned to her bedside with her daughter Mrs. Mary Armstrong of Arvada. A longtime Evans resident, she was over 75 and died from grip.
Friday afternoon at 4 15 children at the high school auditorium will hear fairy stories told by three Normal school maids. Lucile Allard will present American Indian tales The Red Swan The Island of Skeletons Snow Bird and Water Tiger White Hawk the Lazy. Grace Davis will narrate Fire Myth stories Nancy McCarthy will present The Palace Made By Music and The Brook in the King’s Garden. Admission is free.
Colorado sugar beet farmers at the 4th annual FECA convention pledge a universal $6 a ton rate from factories for the 1911 crop. Delegates numbering 127 represent about 15 000 farmers, with varied offers by field and sugar content. Legislative bills affecting agriculture loom as next agenda.
Prof and Mrs Ernesti gave a dinner at Normal Hill on Tuesday night. The W C T U held a memorial service at the first Presbyterian church for Frances Willard. The program included readings by Mrs C Clark and Miss Seelbach, music, prayers, and tributes by several speakers and church members.
A workman unearthed a mammoth tusk and tooth fragment about three miles northeast of Fort Collins while digging gravel for a new college road. The tusk measures 18 inches long and is described as frail. Further details were to follow.
The other tusk was unearthed and a preservation effort will take place for the college museum. Four feet of the tusk are visible today.
A county court session opens to determine if five men arrested on bootlegging charges are guilty and what penalties apply. The trial features jurors lawyers and prisoners as evidence is examined including bottle contents labels and possession details amid slow proceedings.
Carl A. Thompson and Miss Annie Rasmussen of Greeley were married Saturday February 11 at the Presbyterian manse, officiated by Rev. R. J. Hunter.
Thieves gained entry to the rear porch of H. N. Haynes last evening and carried away the refrigerator contents. This morning a scattered pile of matches and an emptied icebox were found on the porch. no items inside the residence were disturbed.
Misses Helen and Marie Enright entertained a group of young friends Tuesday evening at their parents home Mr and Mrs J A Enright. The house was decorated with hearts and Valentines and each guest received a Valentine. A lively evening of games music and a late lunch followed.
The Fraternal Union held a Valentine basket social with strong attendance. Baskets and boxes raised 19.70 to benefit a sick brother, conducted by Deputy W. E. Hartley. A future event will be led by a men’s committee with promises of a pleasant evening.
Tonight at the Normal School Mr Gideon presents opera themed selections and a workaday world talk with vocal numbers by Prof Fitz and Mr Kendel to benefit the Student Relief committee. Friday sees Gideon at First Congregational church with a Wagnerian lecture recital under the Fortnightly Musical club.
Contracts and relinquishments seal start of Standley Lake irrigation works northwest of Denver. Paris telegraph confirms French bank loan of 2 000 000 for project financing. D R I Co and Kenefick Construction coordinate crews in Kansas City and Chicago. Work to begin soon, target completion by November 1 1911.
Miss Grace Hollingsworth was honored Tuesday evening with a party by the young ladies of Shaw Dry Goods. Guests arrived in festive attire, enjoyed a dinner and children’s games, received Valentines, and were treated to refreshments as the event ended.
The Commercial club reports a letter from the Amer ican Embassy Legation and Consulate association seeking a Greeley member. The role costs nothing. duties require backing homes for foreign representatives and urging Congress to provide adequate quarters. Members from many cities exist, offering one Greeley candidate a chance.
Mrs. Z. X. Snyder and Mrs. S. M. Hadden hosted a Tuesday afternoon informal gathering for Mrs. Harry Thayer of Colorado Springs. A dozen guests, friends of Mrs. Thayer formerly from Greeley, enjoyed refreshments including dainty Tre frais.
