Roosevelt backers claim recent returns show Roosevelt gaining momentum while Taft and Wilson campaigns press on. Chicago results indicate strong support for suffrage and party leaders highlight cross-Atlantic political shifts impacting the 1908 contest.
In Washington the committee’s reply on the Norris bill drew attention to the rights of Colorado, with the measure intended to legalize rights-of-way for Union Pacific. Attorney C. C. Ley represented Greeley before the committee to address objections and explain the proposed securit yment.
A Grover gathering Monday night discussed relief measures for destitute dry land farmers and plans to seek aid from the chamber. A commercial club meeting read a county report urging Weld County to consider division, with local residents split on the separation.
A water spaniel and two ordinary cats have worked as a team to slaughter 784 rats this year at city dumping grounds. Owner O Kester spends days there with the three companions. Mayor Mayher visited and suggested strychnine, but Kester said his dog and two kittens have exterminated the rats.
Trinity church boys defeated Park church 65 to 30 after a tight first half that ended 21 to 20. Bunker starred for Park with Nims and Stein leading Trinity scorers as Howarth Coulter Carter and Carpenter contributed for the home team.
Funeral services for C P Kemmerer were held at his home 701 Eleventh Street at 2 30 PM. A large crowd gathered to pay last respects as a Christian Science service was conducted by Mrs J K Elmer. Members from Knights of Pythias Pythian Sisters Ladies of the Maccabees and Women of Woodcraft attended the graveside rites led by Prelate C E Short. Pallbearers included Frank Beeman J P Griegg A W Jacobs and others.

Greeley city council heard volunteers urge that their chosen chief replace George Venables the auto truck driver amid claims the volunteers must select their own chief. No settlement reached. Ordinance on Sixteenth Street improvement district moved to first reading. Officials discussed sprinkling sewers and a town cleanup week proclaimed with citywide garbage pickup. A cemetery caretaker resigned and Vincent Phenix named. Habey Floyd received an aerodome permit on Eighth Avenue planned with a cement wall.
Clarence Candlin of Eaton read a Weld County Poultry association paper on White Leghorns. The talk traces origin from Mediterranean Albino stock, spread through Europe, and to America about 60 to 70 years ago. It covers improvement in body shape for egg production, feeding and management, profitability versus large fowl, and the Leghorn’s superior egg laying, range suitability, and prominence in New Jersey and New York farms and hotels.
A Greenley household tested a patent vacuum cleaner and found it cleaned three coats while worn. The experiment showed dust removal from coats as the lady of the house wore each garment, reportedly with great results and plans to spread the method locally.
Ault April 10 The new town board was installed last night and officer appointments made for the year. F J McIntyre as clerk A C McIvor treasurer S W Sheetz town marshal and night watchman C N Tinker police magistrate F C Tinker town plumber E Schroel town engineer Dr J W Craig health officer. McIvor serves without salary as city pays his bond saving about 100 yearly. 100 trees to be planted along streets funded by the city for owners to care for. Lighting improvements planned. Indebtedness stands at 1300 in floating warrants aside from water works bonds. Mayor G A Hill and trustees C A Brayton Albert Nichols F R Girardot R E Sivers Al Davis Gus Anderson.
The Herald and Presbyterian notes Rev John S Hamilton of Cleveland Ohio and helpers completed a city blessing meeting in Red Oak Iowa. A tabernacle was built under Dr C A Berger. Berger is called to Greeley Colorado, beginning work immediately. He gained citywide affection for his unselfish life and devotion amid family illness forcing departure.
Taxpayers consider a plan from a well known business figure to repurpose the old jail as a fireproof vault for county records. An investigation is expected to explore using the building to relieve space in the courthouse and avoid immediate construction of a new courthouse.
At a Weld County Commercial club meeting 16 clubs were represented and a campaign to promote dairying through county papers was approved. W. R. McClelland was chosen to contribute articles, and a state immigration board petition seeks northern Colorado members. A $1,200 county fund will finance pamphlets detailing each county district.
Reverend James S. Martin of Pittsburgh, leader of the World’s Second Citizenship conference, arrived in Greeley for a short visit with former parishioners before heading to Denver. He plans to return Saturday to preach at the Reformed Presbyterian Church Sunday morning and the First Presbyterian Church Sunday evening, hosted by the families of David and Scott McClelland.
Mrs Annie Rosenof arrived this morning from Kansas to visit her son Jake Rosenof and his family.
Under Windsor Militia auspices last night at the Armory the first Athletic Smoker drew about 200. events included a 105 pound Stewart vs Shoemaker in wrestling, Barclay vs Curley, and a ten round boxing match Kid Anaya versus Fred Ross. Anaya then earned a shot at Mugegsy Steels in Cheyenne on April 26 during I O O F lodge sessions in Fort Collins. The crowd remained lively, and organizers plan future events.
