Survivors Report 17 Known Among 59 Aboard Squalus

Portsmouth May 2 The first rescue of the submarine Squalus crew brought seven men to the surface and later eight more, leaving 47 believed alive in the hull and 27 in flooded compartments. Officers and civilians rode the doomed vessel as 59 aboard, with a second descent planned to reach remaining divers.

Carr Slashes Colorado Budget by Six Hundred Eighteen Thousand

Governor Carr trims the 1999 41 biennium by 618000, canceling 300000 from general direct relief and 300000 from state tourism advertising. Other cuts include 100000 from the Capitol building fund and 22000 from the State College of Education at Greeley, with further reductions to Fort Collins Agricultural College and School of Mines, plus smaller trims across various departments.

Farewell Party Held for Dr. George Norlin

Boulder May 24 Colorado U held a farewell gathering for President George Norlin who is leaving soon. George Willard Frawlar of Colorado State College of Education presided as six college presidents attended in honor of Norlin. A parade of floats and a track and field meet were part of the event with no crowning ceremony observed.

18 Year Old Gill Boy Dies on Wednesday

Wallace Prager age 18 of Fraser died Wednesday morning at Om Grawley hospital. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs Rickard Fraser of Gill. Survived by parents a brother Willan and grandparents Mr and Mrs WW M Fraser of Victor Cole and Pfr and Mrs Charles Nelson of Denver. Arrangements pending Salley’s Funeral Home.

Nine-Ton Naval Diving Bell First Used In Rescue

Washington May 23 report that a 9 ton naval diving bell was deployed for the first time in a real life submarine rescue. The device lowered divers to 240 feet off Gig New Haiupentre for a dramatic seabed operation to free 59 officers and crew aboard a sunken submarine. The bell chamber and rescue tower system carried eight men and connected to a support vessel for ascent. The invention by naval engineers enabled safer entry and egress at depth, marking a milestone in deep sea rescue capability.
