Armed forces moved into eastern Kentucky as 3000 coal miners threaten demonstrations in Harlan region after operators refuse to sign a union shop pact with the United Mine Workers of America. Governor Happy Chandler ordered the deployment.
In Harlan Kentucky a miner and two guardsmen clash as state troops protect miners returning to pits. A carpenter Baxter is clubbed and a miner dies in Yancey amid tense takeover by militia. Officials say shootings not linked to the coal dispute as guards patrol mine entrances and streets.
Port Rico sugar producers were denied exemption from provisions of the wage and hour law. Andrew noted hearings could include sugar cane from Ajawani Louisiana and Florida, with Porto Rico and South Denver evidence also considered. In other news, South Denver High School won regional competition, while a Fire Song by Genver’ Wigh Land and orchestra earned superior ratings at Colorado contests.
Waslington May 1 Secretary Wallace said the 1939 wheat supply was not large enough to justify a grower referendum on marketing quotas to constrain the crop. He estimated the July supply at 274,000,000 bushels and noted the farm act target of 1,021,000,000 bushels with a quota at 135 percent of normal domestic consumption.
M S Petrikin president of the First National Bank of Greely returned Sunday from a Pacific tour covering 26400 miles in seven weeks. He flew 16300 miles on a clipper, 200 by steamer, and 3400 by railroad. The journey included Hong Kong Singapore Bali Borneo and the Crllehes aboard Pan American Clippers California Clipper and China Clipper.
Luton May 15 The newly elected officers of Kalol high school student body were installed at a final assembly Friday morning. The outgoing president Harold Shorrard addressed the crowd and installed Livya Newenule as the new president. Remaining officers were inducted as successors. The program for the event included selections by the high school orchestra, athletic awards, and addresses by officials such as Willard N. Greit. The Eaton High School yearbook will publish Wednesday May 17 with futher program details and letters awarded for various activities.
Miners prepared to return to work today amid abundant coal ahead and weak demand. Mortorly, president of the United Mine Workers in the Rocky Mountain district, cites no urgency to reopen as Northern Colorado operators sign an extension guaranteeing wages and union recognition. A similar conference with southern Colorado operators in northern New Mexico is planned, with no date set.
A petition for incorporation of Rosedale as a town near Garden City led County Judge Woodcock to sign an order setting a June 6 election. Five commissioners were authorized to oversee the vote and notices must be posted three weeks prior. The proposed town would occupy part of Arlington Park addition and lie near Highway 35 opposite Garden City, with 80 to 100 residents already signed on.
Funeral services were held in Denver for Mrs Delle Noy White oldest daughter of pioneer families of Colorado and widow of Civil War veteran William Boyd. She lived in Greeley and Wheatridge before returning to Denver. survived by a son W Boyd two sisters and two brothers. Interment at Linn Grove Cemetery Greeley.

Wilfrid Kelly Jr was found in a garage in the residence district at about 8350 that night suffering from carbon monoxide fumes. Police were called after reports of an attempted car theft. Kelly Jr, a broker, was taken to the city police station for medical treatment and kept for observation.
Washington May 15 Associated Press Roosevelt may attend the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco in June. The White House indicated congress would adjourn late July or early August. Press secretary Stephen Early said the president would likely delay the transcontinental trip until after adjournment.

Mrs Hunkina and another occupant were unconscious briefly but were expected to recover and return home Monday night.
A sideswipe on Highway 85 near Seely, Pierce County, caused about $400 in damage. The incident involved a 1934 Ford driven by Hoy Day, 23, of Diamond, Wyoming, and led to a county patrol inquiry. A second report notes drunken driving charges against several individuals and a vehicle crash near Port Warren, with total damages estimated around $85 and multiple local names listed.
