A dairy crisis in Greeley over ropy milk linked to the bacteria Klebsiella lactia viscosus spreads through improper washing of equipment. The microbe thrives at low temperatures, roping milk and forcing a dairy to near closure until proper sterilization with boiling water and steam is implemented.
A rail line reports an average of a trainload of sheep daily from Greeley with 31 cars today and 40 cars planned for tomorrow from the Union Pacific towns Mir territory. The district along the UP to Collina now totals 1100 cars fed to market.
Beebe area combatting storm damage with limited communication. School attendance dropped to one pupil and one teacher from a fifty student enrollment. Local efforts included amateur telephone line repairs while the county hospital reports six consumptives among an average daily load of about twenty three patients.
A five coach special train of Union Pacific officials led by E. H. Harriman arrived at Greeley at 7:45 AM. The entourage included Al Mohier, Tarrima’s Arden private car, the Lawn sleeper, and a dining car. Harriman and other executives planned to stay in Denver for daylong engagements with the Commercial Club’s arrangements.
Mrs. Victor Stone asks for divorce from Victor Stone alleging years of abuse since their 1905 Denver marriage and seeks to restore her maiden name Agatha Firestack. The notice also lists a clairvoyant reading room at Elite Eighth Avenue and Ninth Street.
Promoters of the Denver-Greeley Valley irrigation district announce a $2,000,000 bond issue to fund canal and ditch work along 70,000 acres on both sides of the Burlington railroad and the right bank of the South Platte. G. B. Speer and bond salesmen tour the eastern half of the project. bonds dated August 5, 1909, pay interest semiannually at Adams and Weld counties treasuries or Chicago bank. District spans from Dart Lake north to LaSalle and includes Brighton, Platteville, Hudson, and Keene.
F. H. Grove sold his homestead in the neighborhood for 2450 dollars after about a year on the site. The land was claimed under the old soldier act, allowing a quicker proof up. The ranch, a quarter-section under the Stanley ditch, has a few improvements. Three more surveyors have recent been in Draw to determine acres that can be watered from the Denver and Greeley ditch surveys.
In Denver West Side Court John Cradlebaugh was acquitted of killing Fred W Walton on February 3 at Sixteenth and Champa. The jury, out all night, returned a sealed verdict after five hours of deliberation, amid emotional relief from Cradlebaugh who held his son.
The Gipson area lost many telephone lines after a recent storm. Western Union workers repaired six teams along the C and I track with thirty five poles down within the first miles from Greeley. East west lines suffered most as soft ground caused poles to topple. Telco crews strive to restore service, but full restoration may take time. Wesley Putnam is in Denver today.
The G. H. Sweet ranch near Farmers' Spur sold for 32000 dollars, 340 acres about 90 per acre. Purchases go to Edson L. Bracken of Denver with 2 acres and George Annett of Greeley with 109 acres. Bracewell farm sold for 19000 dollars, 160 acres, price over 100 per acre, buyer J. Stevenson of Missouri.
Two trainloads of Eaton sheep and cattle departed the stockyards Monday with portions bound for Omaha. Twenty nine cars of sheep were shipped from Lucerne. Storm caused little damage but feeding pens pose a challenge in bad weather. Some sheep will be finished in Omaha area feedyards before sale. Fewer sheep and cattle remain in the Baton district.
Kersey endured a severe storm as the Empire river flooded the countryside. Telegraph lines from Kersey to Hardin and to Greeley were down, but no injuries were reported. The Bijou ditch burst earlier but was repaired after a period of anxiety. Misses Josephine Knight and Mary McCorrison began a long trip to Poston.
In Greeley, a federal court sustained the demurrer of government attorneys in the Currier estate condemnation case. The judge allowed the government to proceed toward a jury trial to decide damages. The treasury and public interests back the site with $15,000 appropriated. heirs demand higher value.
Five new Weld county school districts announced from district No 79 created Saturday, with four more planned in ten days. No 79 carved from Hun telton and adjoining Hazelton and No 70 lands. Voters total thirty eight with four opposing. Bonds for a new school house expected before fall term. Weld county reaches ninety five districts. more districts numbered to 104 expected.
Weld county borders shift as Kansas areas join. Numbers 81 82 and 92 remain open while four new districts fill in with planned boundaries. The Box Elder valley proposal will face a Saturday vote. Newly elected district 79 board includes President W M Edwards Secretary Edwin H Bilis Treasurer J R Schamm.
Kersey establishes a first class dairy operated by Henderson living on the W. R. Reeves place. He owns numerous milking cows and will deliver milk to residents twice daily, creating a promising local business opportunity.
Weld County moves to be designated a second class county to raise salaries of county officers and possibly lower certain service and filing fees. The bill would amend the existing statute classifying counties without altering other law, leaving Weld County’s fee structure per third class statutes.
The Union Pacific will compensate Rhodes of Kersey for a valuable horse imported from Iowa. The horse was left in Denver yards during car repairs, caught a cold that developed into pneumonia and died. It is unclear if humane society involvement will occur. Rhodes loses the horse, the railroad will cover the loss.
Final settlement day concluded for two estates. The E A Coney estate near Ault passed to Emily R Coney the only heir with about 20000 dollars. Michael Mc Laughlin estate children divide residue with each receiving 123 dollars. Trudy Cameron state secretary of the Brotherhood of St Paul left for Pueblo for a three days session.
