The proposed new county jail to be built beside the courthouse draws mixed opinions. Some favor locating the taller structure near the court and sheriff offices, while property owners prefer a more isolated site in a city of Greeley. The county commission has decided to place the jail near the courthouse, with petitions possible if changes are demanded. Mrs. J W Bird and Mrs Gascon of Green River Wyoming visit relatives in Greeley.
June 23 Fosstown reports a well by George Coon on adjoining land taps a large, inexhaustible water flow. A 4 HP engine pumps 40 to 44 cubic inches per second, enough to irrigate a quarter section without depleting the supply. The well reaches about 15 feet depth near Crow Creek after sand was removed. quicksand had paused work earlier. Authorities plan more wells in the area. J 8 Forney of Foss & Forney is building a neat seven room bungalow on the town site.
Reverend Basham, pastor of the Methodist church in Johnstown, surprised his congregation by resigning yesterday. He has served about six months and is expected to attend the university at Boulder or Denver next winter.
Mr and Mrs A J Cunningham and their young daughter traveled to Brigesdale to visit brother Oliver Cunningham and inspect the area with plans to relocate there.
Asa McLeod and his sister Mrs J M Boys depart Monday for the Pacific coast to be away several months. Mrs McLeod travels with her son and daughter for a summer visit to Dubuque and other Iowa points.
E B Kennedy departs with the second division for a two day outing to Wylie's grove where the patrol will be led by Judge G H Bradfield. They prepare for a Methodist church Sunday school picnic and perform camp life activities. Next week the entire Methodist Boy Scout group travels to Boulder for a chantauqua.
The City National Bank of Greeley prepares to open next Monday in the Camfield Trust building. Officials announce a $100000 capital and a formal reception next Tuesday evening. Farmers Trust will occupy the adjoining room and a savings department will operate with a state of the art vault and mahogany and Arizona marble interior.
Mr and Mrs Roger and their daughter Ethel left after visiting friends here for a few weeks and traveled to Denver last evening.
The first state flag, four by eight feet with three blue white and blue bars and a red gold outlined C, arrived in Greeley after the legislative session. It was hoisted at Fort St. Vrain and later displayed at the PBEO reception, designed by Carson of the Denver Orpheum. The flag belongs to the Greeley Tribune.
Mr and Mrs Emmerick traveled to Denver this morning to resume their westward trek after a brief visit with Mr and Mrs J A Thompson.
Miss Ruby and Miss Gertrude Houston of Miller Nebraska arrived in Greeley this morning. After sightseeing they will proceed to Fort Collins to spend the summer at the home of W A Hackett.
The Dads team shocked the Spuds with a decisive performance as the Huskies pushed ahead. Key plays and a strong fourth quarter secured the win for the Dads in a tense high school basketball clash.
The Trinidad team defeated by the well played fielding of Greeley and earned runs, with Gargano pitching six innings for Trinidad and Toothacher ineffective for the Spuds. Greeley’s batting produced seven hits as they built a 7 3 lead by the fourth inning and held on to win 9 to 5 amid a large weekday crowd.
The P.E.O convention concluded with officers chosen and a reception held last night marking the end of activities. Details on the new officers and ceremonial notes were released after adjournment.
Resolutions adopted at the P E O convention highlight Miss Martha Farrier’s retirement gift and applause for Miss Osman and Miss Winona Reeves. Colorado delegates elect officers led by Mayme Koehler and announce next state gathering set for Trinidad.
The Weld County Oratorical contest was held at the Majestic theatre with strong attendance. Miss Gertrude Rissman won first prize for her oration on the Klu Klux Klan, with Miss Wilhelmina Thorkilson second and Alfred Gorsberg third. all winners were from Kersey.
Weld county will see nearly a million dollars more in assessed value for 1911, with total valuations approaching five million. Railroads Denver Laramie and Northwestern and Union Pacific drive most of the increase though some firms are reduced. Union Pacific faces substantial rises with $6,000 in last year’s taxes in litigation while the county seeks a settlement before delinquent lists. The 1911 levy could bring in about $18,000 more in taxes if unchanged.
Denver architect Robert Roeselaub meets with bidders as the Greeley school board prepares to open bids tomorrow afternoon for the new high school. Estimated cost stands near 120000 dollars. The design features a modern fan ventilation system that provides fresh air every seven minutes in rooms and a complete air change in halls every fifteen minutes.
Mrs H F Warren travels with her parents Mr and Mrs G A Wike to Denver for the day. The Wikes spend the summer in Colorado to escape Indiana heat.
Mr and Mrs F B Pitney of Seattle Washington travel to Fosston to spend a week or two visiting Mr and Mrs A J Pitney.
Mr and Mrs J H Russell left this morning for Idaho Springs where they will remain all summer. The trip appears to be a family vacation with plans to stay through the season.
The International Congress of Farm Women announces the first gathering in Colorado Springs next fall. Rural wives and helpers will discuss better homes, sanitation, education, and refinement, with domestic science exhibits and lectures on home management. Leaders from many institutions will attend and speak.
The State Historical Society plans to recover a small obsolete cannon from the old fort at St. Vrain. A monument marks the enclosure where an old well sits in the fort’s southwest corner. Abandoned in 1856, the cannon was tossed into the well and later forgotten.
A Johnstown committee from the commercial club Bruner Porter Harris Sansom and Grantham went to Greeley on a secret mission regarding a proposed electric road that might place Johnstown on its line. BE. N. Reaser and Denver associates have spent time in Johnstown with a stock sale proposition for an electric line not yet beyond the paper stage.
