GM to install shields to prevent steering loss
General Motors will fit shields on most 1971 and 1972 full size models to stop rocks or gravel from jamming the steering. The NHTSA warned owners of about 3.5 million cars that gravel could lodge in the steering coupling. GM will install the shield at no charge and advise dealers to fit it quickly. The center for Safe Driving criticized the response as too lenient while noting 68 reports of alleged interference.

Denverite Dies In Wyoming Auto Accident
A Denver resident Ada P. Rosa 47 and Ralph Evans 24 of American Fork Utah died in separate Interstate 80 Wyoming crashes Thursday. Rosa’s car rolled three times west of Laramie injuring two others. Evans died when his car rolled several times 32 miles east of Evanston. The Wyoming toll reached 133 2 for 1972. Neil Homer Smith 63, longtime author and World War II correspondent for The New York Times and other outlets, died in Chicago. He lived in Russia 1932 to 1977 and wrote Black Man in Red Russia. He was near completing a book on his Ethiopia life from 1947 to 1982.

The Colorado Labor Council executive board voted 27 to 1 to keep its endorsement of George McGovern for president, defying AFL-CIO President George Meany who ordered withdrawal. A special convention of affiliated unions may be convened between Sept. 18 and Oct. 8 to revisit the decision.
