Hogs Profit More On Legume Pasture Says Mosher
Illinois hog producers can raise profits by using well fertilized legume pasture. A 10 year study of 200 hog farms shows top performers used more pasture and hay, lowering grain use and death losses after weaning. Complex herds are prone to chronic swine enteritis known as necro. Proper sanitation, correct rations, and early veterinary consultation help identify the cause, save sick pigs, and protect the rest of the herd from future outbreaks.
Plant Food Added in Fall Boosts Wheat and Hay Production
HIO agronomists urge fall fertilization of wheat and meadow crops with 400 to 600 pounds of plant food per acre. For rotations with alfalfa or soil builders use phosphate and potash grades like 0-12-12 or 0-20-20. for less productive soils use complete nitrogen phosphate and potash grades such as 3-12-12, 4-12-8 or 4-16-8. Nitrogen is especially needed in rotations with mostly small grains corn or soybeans.

Face Lifting Pastures Boosts Thrifty Growth Says Agronomists
URDUE University agronomists urge a September face lifting for old rundown pastures. A soil test, liming, and 400 pounds per acre of 0-20-10 or 0-20-0 fertilizer at seeding start a renovation. New grasses Timothy and smooth brome are recommended with red clover broadleaf trefoil and Ladino clover as legumes. Overall, a seedbed, carefulWorking, and legume mix drive lush production.
