Gravity Independent is a weekly newspaper published every Thursday under J. S. Francis as editor and publisher. The paper is mail registered as second class matter at Gravity town post office with an annual subscription of $1.50.
The piece recalls Bryan’s Destiny speech warning that appearances mislead, as discussion of China and Japan around Shanghai suggests a future risk. Mrs. Irma Woodyard and Miss Lois Anderson of Bedford joined their mother Mrs. Della Anderson and Leslie Anderson to drive to Clarinde to visit Virgil Anderson in the hospital on Sunday.
A vintage recipe combines rhubarb snow cream pudding and custard. Gelatine is soaked then dissolved with sugar and lemon juice, folded with stiff egg whites, and chilled to set. Cook rhubarb with sugar without added water, then make vanilla custard to serve atop the rhubarb and pudding.
Mrs Iona Heninger was able to return to her home here last week. She is much improved.
The Ladies Aid society of the Methodist church will meet one day earlier on Wednesday May 25 with Mrs L T Reed. Grece Beemer and Nell Lock are program committee. Mesdames John Walker Milo Dugan Leon Ledgerwood and Alda Burwell are serving committee.
Mr and Mrs George Irwin and the Misses Frances Kate and Jessie Miller of Bedford visited Sunday with Mrs Iona Henninger.
Oak Hill Aid gathered at the church on Wednesday with about 35 attendees. Devotions were led by Letha Posten, followed by a Mothers Day program hosted by Lou Cree and Jessie Fuelberth. Tributes honored a new baby girl stillborn to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Sexton. Mildred Barker wrapped up a Holt Independent School term with a district picnic and award.
Jim Hamilton and his wife were guests of Fred Goudie and his wife Sunday for an informal social visit.
The Drug Store advertises enamel colors available in 10c and 25c sizes. It promotes a range of shades for hobby and craft use, highlighting affordability and easy access to popular hues.
K. W. Hanna and wife of Topeka Kansas visited last week at the home of his cousin Oren Price and other relatives and old friends. Mr. Hanna is a son of Joe Hanna, a former resident here.
Political advertisement for the Republican nomination in the Seventh Congressional District for the June 6, 1938 primary. Born 1891 on a Muscatine County farm, Iowa, he studied at the University of Iowa, practiced law in Atlantic since 1919, served as Cass County Attorney for three terms, and was in World War I. He stresses farm issues as paramount and pledges conscientious policy if elected.
Taylor County Welfare Office lists 194 men and 0 women on WPA projects, plus a few non relief foremen and supervisors. Peak WPA figures were 287 men and 17 women in Oct 1936, with drought relief earlier. Certifications require relief eligibility. unemployment alone does not qualify. WPA allows short departures for private work and immediate reassignment on return. long absences trigger stop cards. Farmers needing labor should coordinate with the welfare office if WPA workers refuse standard wages.
The proposal calls for cooperation among all parties to arrange a work relief program so men can secure steady employment during busy periods and employers can obtain labor when needed.
The Netoppen camp fire girls met with Miss Helen Smith their two year guide and gifted her a remembrance. A handkerchief shower honored vice president Doris Savage who departs for California. Treasury funds were shared among members. Wanda Joslyn earned a camp fire ring for the wood gathers rank. They visited Twin Bridges for an outdoor meal with tepee fires and cooking ham eggs and beef.
Free Methodist Church invites all to attend a district meeting with Rev R B Campbell preaching each evening at 8 from Thursday through Sunday. He speaks Friday at 9 and 2 30 and Saturday at 2 30, with a district minister in charge. Quarterly conference begins Saturday at 9, Sunday school earlier, Love Feast, preaching at 11 and missionary service at 3.
Mrs. W. G. Keith and Mrs. Wayne Utter hosted a birthday dinner for their father T. M. Utter at the Keith home in Prescott on Sunday. Attendees from Gravity included T. M. Utter and his wife, Chauncey Moore and family, Earl Coy and family, and Fred Keith and wife.
Mrs J H Salyards expresses appreciation for kindness shown during her sprained ankle including a fruit and candy box from the Loyal Berean clues and others who helped.
