Uncle Sam tightens protection around federal plant work as Navy yards in the Philadelphia area restrict visitors and require a full American‑citizen and bonded staff. An Army and Navy Intelligence unit monitors construction, with an FBI espionage role under a 1917 act. Visitors now receive a marine escort during tours of experimental workspaces.
Washington units fear funds loss as Congress ponders a 4.5 billion economic stimulus. About 4,000 General Accounting Office temporary workers were told to take their annual vacations by June 30 or risk losing them. Appointments end in June, and failure to pass the program threatens widespread job losses across federal service amid perilous New Deal days.
The North Gravity residence of the late H. N. Ray hosted a Saturday afternoon sale of household items. Executor H. E. Nevin, and Mrs. Carl Stephens of Ringgold county, a Ray relative, agreed the items belonged to Stephens per a predeceased will. Horace Beemer family to move in once vacated, likely within the week.
Leslie Cobb of Ross township examined a possible run for county clerk during a Gravity visit Friday afternoon. A former county treasurer candidate fourteen years ago, Cobb has long backed the Republican ticket and now weighs entering the primary with plans to announce soon and join the campaign effort.
J W Ledgerwood died at his daughter’s home in Gravity on April 16 1938 after long illness, aged 90. He was born January 10 1848 in Sullivan County Indiana, married Cynthia Ann Ambaugh September 25 1867, and survived by five children, eleven grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren. Funeral at Church of Christ Gravity, April 19, burial Gravity Cemetery. He was a charter member, deacon and elder, long Sunday school superintendent, and worked in Chandler lumber yard before running a family business with his son Charley. His wife predeceased him by months, they celebrated sixty fifth wedding anniversary shortly before. He is remembered as devoted husband and loving father, a longtime Gravity settler and pillar of the church.
George Roberts and his wife traveled to Clarinda Saturday afternoon to attend the funeral of Mrs Kirk Harland, the aunt of Mrs Roberts.
The Methodist Church with Pastor Rev A J Bissinger shifts the WOW Omaha radio hour to 230 on Sundays and outlines two sermons Faith It's Nature and Use for next two Sundays. Young people plan Saturday night gathering at League room 715 pm and Leona Pigg leads Sunday night. A six member church committee will engage in local talent programs this summer. New members Beulah Worrel Glenn Savage Betty Ginn Helen Nina Kelly join by transfer and confession of faith. Old members urged to welcome newcomers and support Christian living.

Mr and Mrs Joe Oneal and their Omaha children spent Sunday at the Nate Sexton home, visiting with local family and sharing a relaxing afternoon together.
The Misses Loretta Baker and Lorraine Stafford were guests at dinner and overnight Tuesday with Miss Dorothy Beckett who celebrated her 16th birthday anniversary at that time.
Mrs. Merle Allen entertained her S. S. class at a Saturday party planned as an Easter event. The gathering, postponed a week, preserved the Easter theme with a cheerful, springtime mood.

Dr and Mrs Reed drove to St. Joseph on Thursday to attend a shrine meeting that evening.
