Preventing hay fires in barns early in storage
Iowa State College agricultural engineer Henry Glese notes moisture content density packing and ventilation control spontaneous combustion risk in haymows. USDA says moisture should stay under 30 percent and 10 ton mows are unlikely to heat dangerously. Chopped hay resists ignition more than long hay due to restricted oxygen. Open doors and windows to vent moist air. Salt is ineffective. Hay fires begin about a month after harvest with heat and odor followed by vapor. if detected, remove hay carefully without exposing all at once. Use caution and avoid stepping on hay. A board over the top can prevent falling into flames.
