Rufus Poland Speaks to Departing Soldiers in Montana

In the absence of Governor Stewart R. G. Poland, Fergus County treasurer and state auditor, Rufus Poland delivers a message from Montana citizens to departing soldiers. He calls them the best manhood, says they go as ambassadors, and vows state support, with a salute to liberty and a promise of a fitting reception upon return.

Fergus County Boys Arrive at Camp Lewis

Eight special trains bringing 3,170 men of the selective army arrived at Camp Lewis from Montana Idaho Washington and California. Joseph Campanella of Los Angeles was handcuffed and escorted by a deputy sheriff after an apparent mental derangement incident. Work at the post was light as construction to expand the cantonment resumed later.

Looks Better Now in Russia

Washington reports the Russian army is advancing toward Riga on a wide front, having moved seven miles in five days. The Russian military is being reorganized under General Alexiev, with ousting of discredited commanders. Cables from Petrograd praise the Kornilov rebellion's suppression without bloodshed and claim troops morale is splendid and the government stronger. Germany troops on the east front are being retained in greater numbers than at any time since the war began.

Sammies May Be In Fight Before Spring

Washington dispatch reports some army authorities expect portions of the American expedition in France to see front service before the spring campaign. The war department has not released timing, but General Pershing signaled that the American expedition will participate in spring fighting.
