What the YWCA does for the Army and Navy
The War Work Council of the YWCA supports the War Department by running 91 Hostess Houses in army, navy, and aviation camps, including 13 for colored troops, and providing home-like space for visiting mothers and friends. It offers special aid to foreign-born members in their native languages and operates 93 Girls’ Club and Recreation Centers to welcome soldiers to social events. Aimed at keeping service members connected to home, the YWCA also runs centers for girls to stay fit for war work and notes that many in uniforms will be paired with women in war industries. Houses are being built for U S Signal Corps girls serving in France.
