Granville Stuart Dies at Missoula Pioneer and Historian
Granville Stuart known as the Argonaut died at his Missoula home on the 2nd inst of heart trouble after a weeklong illness. He was Montana’s oldest resident by residence, a writer and historian, and U S minister to Paraguay and Uruguay. Funeral and burial occurred in Deer Lodge with many pioneers in attendance. He left a widow and niece Mabel Pringle. Born August 27 1831 in Clarksburg WV he journeyed west in 1849 and again in 1861, helping discover gold at Gold creek Deer Lodge valley in 1858. He lived in Fergus county 1881 to 1889 and ran D H S Cattle company interests. He served as Butte City Librarian and was drafting a Montana history at death.
