Fort Benton Montana the Oldest Town on the Missouri River

The article recalls Fort Benton as Montana’s oldest town, tracing its origins to 1864 as a fur trading post of the American Fur Company, its rise as a Missouri River gateway, the relocation from Fort Lewis, and the later development under Major Culbertson. It recounts fort life, labor pay, rations, and social ceremonies with Blackfeet and other tribes, and details early wheeled transport, gold dust rumors, and tobacco shortages.

Fort Benton Fort History and Restoration Efforts

Matt Carroll and George Steel built the first store outside the fort in Helena area. A townsite was laid out in 1865 by Colonel DeLacy. Fort Benton became a military post in 1870 and the Northwest Fur Company left in 1877. Government occupancy waned, decay set in, and in 1907 a bill by T A Cummings funded fort restoration. The ruins now sit in a public park with hopes of full restoration.
