In Grass Range the July Fourth speech by Judge Roy E. Ayers was praised as one of his best, delivered extemporaneously with a homey feel. The speech stressed liberty and the global stakes of the war, while noting the community’s warmth enhanced the occasion.

Residents they spoke with favored it, engineers saw feasible routes along the creek north of the bluffs, while Amos Snyder proposed the railroad right of way through Becket. The group defers to the county surveyor, but insists the road should have been built in twenty years and be open within a year.
