Experts Test New Infantry Rifle At Aberdeen

Washington reports that army ordnance experts demonstrated a semiautomatic shoulder rifle, the Garand named for inventor John C. Garand, at Aberdeen proving grounds. The Garand matches the size of the service rifle and could reach about 60 shots per minute, compared with the Springfield bolt action at roughly 25. Doughboys may become practically machine gunners as the military pursues this postwar weapon.

Iowa Leads U S in Farm Telephones at 81.6 Percent

Iowa leads the nation in farm telephone access at 81.6 percent, followed by Kansas at 77.9 percent. Other states show lower rates with Ohio at 62.4, Minnesota 59.9, Dakota 59.4, and Wisconsin 59.1 percent.

Governor Dixon joined a northern tour stop as thousands lined the depots, at the Pla cer hotel reception and Shrine temple address. Poultry Demonstration Planned for Rassie Community

A county poultry demonstration is set for Friday in the Rassie area with a picnic dinner option. Participants should pen non culled and culled birds a week ahead to compare egg production. Demonstrators will show humane handling through a dedicated exit hole in the coop. Posters will announce culling day and potential savings of $2 per eliminated chicken.
