Lawrence Brown, a legendary and independent figure near Beaverhead rock in southern Montana, claimed a mine bank and paid workers in ore. When a state mining inspector demanded entry for legal inspection, Brown drew a shotgun and drove the official away, never permitting engineers to view his property. Promoters courted him, but he clung to the wealth he derived from his ore and kept his claim, living by his own rules.
