High Costs Hit Uncle Sam In Food For Soldiers
Uncle Sam spends between 9 and 10 million dollars yearly to feed soldiers and sailors. Over 12 years food costs have more than doubled. Army rations rose from 16 cents in 1898 to about 381 cents today due to meat prices. Chinese beef costs 10 to 11 cents a pound in Hong Kong, while New Zealand and Australian mutton are cheaper. Freight and transport to the Philippines add to costs, affecting prune, peach, and beet sugar expenses.
