Hell's Half Acre of Butte Doomed
A historic district of Butte known as Hell's Half Acre, famed as a red light area and inspiration for a Service poem, is being cleared for a modern business block. The three story block housed around 500 women, with courts, board walks and a noted slumming visit by Robert Service. The district drew robberies, murders, and reform attempts, including Mayor Duncan's unimplemented uniform dresses policy, and was shut by Attorney General Ford's enforcement edict on commercial vice laws.
