Supreme Court Reverses Contempt Case Victory for Union Labor

Washington May 15 The Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling in a Bucks Stove & Range Co case, finding Chompers Attelell and Frank Morrison officers of the American Federation of Labor guilty of contempt of court in a store boycott. The court said the act was civil contempt and ordered the case dismissed and the matter discontinued.

Apportionment of Library Fine Funds by Districts

The county allocates last year’s fine revenues to districts and townships for library use. Payout to start June 1, based on pupil counts in districts with libraries and township libraries where none exist. A total of $1,181 is distributed on 6,191 pupils, at 181% cents per capita, with listed district shares.

Carrier Pigeon Found on South Manitou Island

On May 13 at the South Manitou Life Saving Station crew members John Tobin William Wheeler and Nelse Nelson found a carrier pigeon on the station roof with a silver leg band and a message from the steamer Henry Phipps. The note said the card came down in the engine room twelve hours after leaving Chicago and wished safe return home to Arthur Chopper. The bird will depart South Manitou for Chicago after rest and nourishment.

Five Miners Perish in Delaware and Hudson Mine

Five miners died in a Delaware and Hudson Coal Company mine near Wilkesbarre last night from white damp and fire. The bodies were recovered today about 1,000 feet from the accident site and the cause remains unknown.

Antrim County Republican Banquet Highlights Fourteenth Annual Event

The fourth annual Republican banquet at Bellaire Opera House followed a 5 pm business meeting. Traverse City guests enjoyed a program by the Bellaire orchestra and the Congregational women prepared the banquet. Primary School Money Apportioned in Traverse County

County Clerk Elmer E. White announced the apportionment of primary school funds for Traverse County. About ten days will pass before distribution by the county treasurer. The spring total is unusually large at about $7 per capita, with shares allocated to each township and the city.

Uprising in Capital City Threatens Foreign Residents

Mexico City reports an imminent uprising and insurgent assault on the capital with fortifications under way. foreigners warned, guards increased, and many foreign women and children sent out. In Cananea, Sonora, insurgents captured the city at night to use as a supply base. A split among rebel leaders over Navarro’s fate is noted while policy on border trade remains neutral.

The South Side Co held its annual meeting on Friday electing W. W. Parr as president, W. N. Kelley as vice president, G. McMichael as secretary, and J. J. Corcoran as treasurer. Since reorganizing after financial difficulties the firm has grown to about 106 employees, with strong demand and few idle workers in Traverse City.

Lansing May 11 Governor Osborn paroled Frank Marston from Jackson prison stating he is dying of consumption. The contractor who secured the parole promised to pay Marston's way west.

Mass Meeting Opens Anti Saloon Campaign in Traverse City

Local option movement gains momentum as the Anti Saloon league launches statewide drive in Grand Traverse county. A Sunday program at City Opera House drew a full house with music by the Church of Christ chorus. Rev Stovall presided and introduced T P Bauer who forecast the destruction of the open saloon within a year. George W Morrow praised Traverse City leadership and challenged an editorial doubting local option’s effectiveness, noting ongoing efforts.

Fire at Frank Prush residence causes minor damage

Firefighters battled a garret blaze at 257 East Tenth Street Saturday at 6 45 PM sparked by the chimney. The fire was extinguished after laying one line of hose, with only a few dollars in damage and full insurance coverage. On return, the gray team pulling the hose wagon bolted, injuring a car and minor wagon gear as the driver controlled the rear.

Marking Big Fill On Blair Township Road Project

County road commissioners drive a large fill across a ravine in Blair township six miles south of the city. The completed fill rises 22 feet, runs about 100 feet long and 24 feet wide at the crest with gravel roadbed. About 1800 cubic feet of earth will be moved, funded by a Blair township appropriation of 1000 dollars to support the road’s construction and linking with last year’s mile.

Marking the bay by Shumaee in Lake Michigan

The U S S Shumaee, a light house tender, lay over in the city Friday night and began placing bouys in the bay this morning. A bell buoy was set on the reef off the wharf near Birmingham, two gas and bell bouys were placed north of Marion island, and another near Old Mission Point. Bell bouys will be placed at Lees Point and Gault Island near Northport.

Rescued Mereda Passengers Reach New York by Rail

Most of the Mereda's rescued passengers have arrived in New York from Norfolk by rail. They all praised the crew of the Mereda. Admiral Farragut is reported to arrive in the city today.

Magnolias Attract City Visitors To Washington Street

A magnolia tree in full bloom at 622 Washington Street draws many spectators from across the city. The plant, first blooming last year, was identified as magnolia by a Central School botanist. About 35 blossoms, 3 to 5 inches wide, show pink outer petals and waxy white interiors, filling the air with a rich perfume.

Mrs Minetta Morris Dies After Illness At 31

Mrs. Minetta Morris 31 wife of Claude A. Morris 410 West Seventh street died shortly after 11 o'clock Thursday forenoon after a yearlong illness of tuberculosis though confined to bed three weeks. Wequetong Club Plans Busy Season of Recreation

The Wequetong club directors laid plans for summer including opening the club house on May 15 with dancing parties to follow. Lumber Yard Fire Damages Thompsonville Yard Sheds

A forenoon fire at the Piqua Handle company lumber yards caused losses estimated between 10000 and 14000 dollars. The blaze started in a shed and, aided by high winds, threatened factory buildings but they were saved. Two sheds burned while bucket brigades aided the fire department. Insurances will cover about two thirds of the loss.

Fire Wounds Firefighter After Slumber Amid Inland Blaze

Doc McDowell and Frank Reynolds fought a blaze along the R. B. railroad in Inland township. While resting near heavy timber, McDowell awoke on fire, his clothing nearly burned away and his legs badly burned, as smoke approached from a different direction than the slashings they had just attacked.

Fire at the Miller Grain lumber yard in Vassar caused $25,000 in damage. The blaze started from a yard engine of the Michigan Central, investigators reported.
