In a Sierra camp tale, Eastern operators buy the Fraternity mine from Lewis and Walter. Nightly apparitions and a deadly betrayal unfold as Lewis murders Lion Howard, then dies by suicide after exposing a vast fortune. News spreads as townsfolk recount the eerie events and the mine’s transfer to a California company.
In a Harrisburg church celebration a choir planned to sing an anthem. The master of ceremonies, an old school gentleman described as high toned and pompous, prepared to announce in a dignified voice that Mr Anthem will now address the congregation to begin the anthem portion.
George Was Inside. A New Yorker’s son fled to India to live with a wealthy uncle. A ship’s arrival with a coffin prompted mourning but revealed a Bengal tiger instead of the nephew. The father messaged India and learned the body had never arrived, confirming the tiger was inside.
A young ensign in the Inglish army, poor and friendless, observed a duchess sneeze loudly at a grand hall. He mimicked the snort, pinched his nose, and rushed from the room to avoid ridicule, leaving guests to infer the offense. The next day a commission was logged.
A widow in Americus recalls Captain Wynn of the Sumter Light Guards killed at Gettysburg. The next morning a painting of him in the parlor appears to be pierced by a chair post when it fell. News arrives that Wynn was killed in the previous day’s battle, shot in the face at the same spot the chair post pierced the canvas.
Two months after widow grants visit to Mrs. Cleveland in the White House, the piece contrasts Mrs. Cleveland's radiant social standing with Mrs. Tyler's faded status and lack of means. It notes Mrs. Tyler's search for a Treasury clerkship and marks John Tyler's unmarked Hollywood cemetery grave as a national disgrace.
The boys run various games and pursuits from dogs and cats to rabbits and foot races. They chase girls and attempt to win them, then run for office, taking a long time to settle into a trot or walk.
