Potts Links Soil Tests to Alfalfa Profits in Michigan

Professor A R Potts spent Friday near Traverse City testing alfalfa soils with William Grant and visiting the T H Lindsley farm on the Peninsula. Federal supervisor Dr Reed accompanied him, touring Antrim county alfalfa efforts and area farms including Holstein stock and cherry orchards. Saturday they aided Williamsburg Alfalfa Club members on soil testing and broader farming questions.

Mrs Martha DeGraw Died After Operation At Home

Mrs Martha DeGraw wife of Ernest DeGraw of Mapleton died Monday morning at the home of George DeGraw 902 Cass street where she was brought for an operation. She was 85 born in Montcalm county and leaves husband and three children Almon 14 Zoa 10 Milton 8. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Standish Grounds to be broken for Episcopal church at cost 5000 dollars.

Charles Dracka aged 66 died at his Garfield township home after eight weeks illness. Survived by wife three daughters three sons and a sister in Chicago. Peninsula Apple Growers Laud Leelanau and Grand Traverse Orchards

Thomas S. Smith of Chicago and George A. Hawley of Hart toured Leelanau and Grand Traverse orchards praising the fruit and orchard care. Indictments in Chicago arson case target Fish and nine others

Grand jury in Chicago returned true bills charging Joseph Fish of Joseph Fish & Co. and nine others in relation to an alleged arson ring. The indictments follow Mrs. Fannie Korshak testimony linking Fish to the group suspected of incinerating five fires to defraud multiple insurance companies. Train falls victim to a perilous climb near Grand Rapids

Martin L. Van Zanten, 17, riding the G R J from Grand Rapids, clung to a rear parlor car step and was dragged along a cattle guard. A gash eight by four inches opened on his back hip and thigh, requiring twenty stitches. He was hospitalized and improving, with home at 612 Gilbert Street, Grand Rapids. Two brothers in Brooklyn and Hoboken were alerted.

Fancy Western Cherries Packaged for Exhibitions

A sample of Bitter Root Valley Co fancy cherry packing is shown at First National Bank to promote local growers. The two pound two parcel post package uses heavy ventilated card board and a confection style inner box with a cherry salad recipe. The fruit is large but not as large as Schmidt's Bigereau or the Windsors, and the flavor is not superior. Local fruit growers are urged to study this packing method.

Mrs Phoebe J Fish dies after long illness at 610 State

Mrs Phoebe J Fish, 69, died at her home Friday night after more than three years of illness. Born in Palmyra Michigan she is survived by two sons C B Curtis Fred D Curtis two sisters Carrie Estes and Adeline Haviland and three brothers John Hoxsie Chas Hoxsie and A T Hoxsie. A funeral service was held Monday at 9 am from the home and interment followed in Adrian Michigan.

Hungry boy found wandering the country by police

Fourteen year old James Thomas, poorly dressed and hungry, was picked up by Poundmaster Gegner after wandering freight cars and country roads for days. He claimed memory loss about his home, said drunken parents turned him out two months ago, and authorities will locate his parents while detaining him at the agency.

Apple crop outlook improves with proper care in Glen Lake

D. EH Day president of the Western Michigan Development Bureau visited Glen Haven from Detroit to inspect the 1913 apple crop. He found little loss where cultivation spraying and thinning were well done, while neglected orchards faced a shrinking crop. Snow apples show high promise and fancy fruit is expected in the Glen Lake region, with overall large yield and excellent quality. Also reported are immigration and local death-fishings notices from Kalamazoo and Munsing respectively.

Severe storm hits Traverse City area causing barn fire and widespread damage

A brutal wind and lightning storm struck Traverse City at noon causing heavy damage citywide. The Lautner farm barn burned destroying crops and equipment while multiple homes suffered shocks, structural damage, and electrical failures. Police and residents, including Mrs. Amler and Mr. Stabler, were affected by the event as trees toppled and telephones and lights failed. In Manistee and Jackson regions, fatalities and criminal identifications were reported amid the storm’s aftermath.
