Fifteen Years in Senate Former Secretary of War Elkins Dies
Washington, Jan. 5 Senator Stephen B. Elkins of West Virginia died here last midnight after a long illness. A lawyer, financier and former secretary of war in Harrison's cabinet, Elkins entered the Senate in 1895 and was a key advocate of the Hepburn rate law. He served as attorney general of New Mexico and U S district attorney, and helped end slavery in territorial holdings. He leaves a lasting legacy as a statesman and financier.
