Phelps Publishing plant destroyed by ice fire in Springfield

In Springfield mass on January 28 the Phelps Publishing Company plant burned and was totally destroyed. Loss pegged at 1800 with Rhode Island Insurance. Fire began in the basement and twelve streams fought the blaze but water froze as it flowed. The firm printed Orange Judd Farmer and Coal House keeping among other periodicals.

Lake Ann and Oviatt Telephone Line Extension Planned

At a meeting of officers and directors of the Lake Ann and Oviatt Telephone Company held Saturday night, plans were approved to extend the line to twelve or fifteen miles. The company now has fifty subscribers and strong interest in the new enterprise. Bids are open for twenty four posts four inch stock.

Fruit Growing Class at Michigan Agricultural College

The college will add a fruit growing course designed for current growers to improve orchard care. It addresses losses from pests like the San Jose scale and coddling moth through better management. The class runs February 11 to February 22, costing about $17.
