Lansing report says G Alexander EL Smith, 55, journal clerk in the Michigan House, collapsed in the Capitol basement while talking with State Accountant Hamilton. He suffered heart trouble, was carried to a sofa, and died en route to Farmington.
Washington February 4. Senate committee reports favorably a resolution by Senator Dick directing the secretary of war to furnish to the Senate all records in the War Department and the Military Academy at West Point relating to hazing in the army. The report notes efforts tied to corruption and discipline reforms.
Harry Cole, a young boy of Honor Michigan, broke his arm in two places and dislocated his elbow during a schoolyard wrestling match. The same day the Night Mail on the Honor branch of the M N BL faced delays after the engine lost wheels, requiring a rescue engine from Manistee. A dancing class opened Tuesday night with about 80 participants taught by Lee Campbell.
Nashville February 3 Two more jurors were secured in the Cooper Sharp case at 11 o'clock today leaving one vacancy and a possible extra seat due to the contest over juror Whitworth's fitness for service.

The Edward Payson Manufacturing Co plans a modern brick and concrete plant on Garfield Avenue between Front and Peninsula streets near Rose Street. Drafts by Jens C. Petersen show a single 200 by 582 foot rock factory with fenced departments, large windows, and a one-story layout to minimize handling costs. Ground space totals about a acre and a half, with plans for a second Bradtetocke factory soon.
Secretary J. W. Blannen of the Traverse City board of trade received a Ludington invitation for a Traverse City representative to speak at Ludington’s annual banquet on February 19 and to join an informal conference with Manistee Sturgington and Muskegon boards to discuss east shore development and cooperation. The invitation will be considered at the Traverse City board’s next annual meeting.
Sault Ste. Marie Mich Feb 3 Sheriff Bayliss investigated a robbery in which two masked men nearly killed a local merchant. The assailants escaped. Grand Traverse Grange No 379 will meet Saturday to discuss Marketing Farm Crops.
Funeral services for A. W. Wait were conducted at his home at 2 PM with Rev. Demas Cochlin officiating. Pallbearers were among Mr. Waits employees, honorary pallbearers were board of public works members, and city officials attended. A quartet sang several selections. Interment followed at Oakwood cemetery.
In Washtenaw Calhoun and Ionia counties the Michigan Statutory Brewers Association challenged local option petitions. Judge Vine ruled to block petitions, and mediations may extend to the state supreme court. Washtenaw involves 565 signers seeking withdraw, risking election validity.
Foreign Minister Kiomura told the lower house of the diet that Japan believes in America’s fairness and that anti Japanese legislation in California would not cause international complications. He stressed confidence in ultimate justice and goodwill of the American people in foreign relations.
In Lansing Michigan on February 23 all regiments of the Michigan National Guard will conduct their regular regimental elections for the first time since the organization of the guard. Company officers are ordered to report to Lansing for the process.

A bill excluding Japanese from public schools in California was passed in the house, reported from Sacramento by wire. The measure targets the education of Japanese children and marks a formal step in segregation policy efforts within the state.
The Elk Rapids Cement and Lime company held its annual stockholders meeting at the local office. Officers elected include C. A. Whyland as president and Nomer Sly as secretary treasurer and general manager. Directors named include Whyland Robinson Atwood and Williams. The Elk Rapids mill is expected to begin operations around March and run until about the holidays, with production near 860,000 barrels of cement.
Harry Day, walking near Summit City, shot and killed a dog after its owner, John Rodis, reportedly called his dog and Rodis revealed a gun. Rodis faced assault charges as Sheriff Frank Uy Shuter escorted him to town. Rodas pleaded not guilty with trial set for Friday. Rodis allegedly had prior trouble involving a shooting.
A mystery surrounds Ardo Williams a year old and a boy sent from Flint to Bay Shore with the note signed Lora. Mir Shidler is sought as the guardian or relative, while the 5 year old is believed placed with Mrs WLS Kinnon in Petoskey. Investigators note a Bay Shore lead and a possible Bay Shore man named Shidler previously seen. Local trains carried the child’s escort and no clear custody or location is yet confirmed.
The Grand Traverse County Humane Society announces plans for its annual meeting next week with time and place to be announced later. Dues are being collected from members at the Peoples Savings Bank through B. L. Edwards who will accept dues or new member applications. Officers to be elected and business to be transacted as plans for the most active year yet are discussed.
Cad lac police seek Bill Mitchell who vanished after pleading sickness while a warrant was served for violating prohibition law. An officer waited days, a physician attested illness, and the guard was called off before the man disappeared in the quiet night.
Indianapolis Feb 3 The tellers report read at the United Mine Workers convention shows Thomas L. Lewis of Bridgeport Ohio re elected president by a majority of 16 269 percent over John H Walker of Danville Illinois The result was announced during today's session and confirms Lewis's continued leadership of the union.
Detroit man Tarver named superintendent for construction of the First National Bank building to fill the vacancy left by A W Wait. Tarver is described as an experienced builder and contractor with expert supervision skills. Mrs Lockhart has left for Muskegon to join her husband who was appointed manager of the Muskegon Knox store. Mrs Lockhart had earlier served as assistant manager of the Duluth Knox store.
Prosecution plans to proceed this term as Parker Cobb and others allege Warden Armstrong of Jackson prison took a bribe of 800 from General Pred W Green. The jury was discharged earlier and the case may be revived. Prosecutor states readiness to try Armstrong in February and to turn over other contractors in the case.
Queen City Chair Co. plans a move from the Zarney Anderson building to the former Gegner store and repair works on Front and Maple streets. The relocation secures bigger quarters for machinery and adds storage space not available in the old location.
