A speaker writes to his sister, asking not to be deemed unkind for not visiting. He says affection remains, though travels keep him away. He laments the lack of a sister's smile and voice, fearing life would seem dreary without her friendship, ending with a farewell and sad thoughts. N.S. P.

What is to be Done With Our Charley

Harriet Beecher Stowe argues that Charley, a restless child, cannot be banished or ignored. Keep him near, provide safe space for play and learning, and guide his energy with attention, stories, and constructive projects or risk his drift into street life. A parental vow to invest time and space now may prevent lasting trouble later.

A Little Difficulty in the Way
