S G Fry Sr longtime Tyler businessman and owner of Grand Theatre in Grand Saline died after a lengthy illness. He served Tyler as city commissioner 1938-45 and as mayor in 1946. Survivors include Juanita Fry and three sons. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Tyler with interment at Cathedral in the Pines Mausoleum.

Texas Draft Call Drops for October in State Quota
The October draft call for Texas is 1,461, down from 1,698 in September, state selective service director Colonel Morris Schwartz said. The state quota mirrors the national share of 29,000 with 27,600 for the Army and none listed for the Marine Corps. August and July inductions were 1,548. About 8,906 are to be forwarded for armed forces pre induction exams in October, compared with totals of 11,135 in September, 6,816 in August, and 8,200 in July. The selection order prioritizes delinquents 19 and older, volunteers under 26, and other volunteers 19-25, with married status affecting priority after August 26, 1960. Local boards may set the pre induction age down to 18 years and nine months if needed, but no one may be inducted before 16.

Crime rate rises across Texas per TDPS report
The Texas Department of Public Safety reports a 7.7 percent rise in overall crime versus last year during January to June. Robbery up 31.2 percent, aggravated assaults surged, auto theft up 148 percent, and thefts up 3.9 percent, with urban areas showing the largest gains.
