Four Van Zandt County 4-H'ers placed highly in district judging on August 20. Nancy Mallory, Teresa Weatherall, Lou Ann Gullett, and Brenda Burns led in Achievement, Public Speaking, Recreation, and Santa Fe respectively. district judges will forward the records to the State 4-H office for state judging. Van Zandt County had 19 records entered for district competition.
The East Van Zandt Singing Convention will be held this weekend at Creagleville United Methodist Church. Singing begins Saturday evening at 7 30 and resumes Sunday at 10 30 with a noon dinner on the grounds. Fletcher Smith urges attendance for both sessions and bringing a lunch. The church notes it is air conditioned for comfort.
Chief Pat Heddins notes a quiet Labor Day weekend in Grand Saline while Texas Highway Commission approves 2.66 million for District 10 road work. The plan covers 274 miles in Van Zandt and surrounding counties and statewide 6,373 miles with 51.1 million construction and 94.7 thousand relocation costs.
Harold Walker, a local businessman, described conditions from Picayune to Biloxi after Hurricane Camille. He cited thousands in damage, 26 000 homes destroyed or damaged, 15 000 businesses affected, and relief efforts by Red Cross Salvation Army Catholic orders and telethon donations topping a million dollars.
W. Marvin Watson former Postmaster General and Johnson aide was elected to the Board of Trustees of Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Scott, Sherwood and Brindley Foundation in Temple. Scott and White, founded 1897, is among Texas' oldest medical centers. Watson serves as President and CEO of Occidental Petroleum Corporation and oversaw Occidental International with offices in 24 capitals.
The 1969 Grand Saline weather report notes April to August rainfall totaling 11 inches in spring and 1 inch in June, 1 inch in July, and none in August. July saw ten days at or above 100 degrees, peak 105. August had 12 days at 104 or higher. Year-to-date rainfall reached 25 inches, near normal. The worst year on record is 1954 with 63 days above 100 and 29.0 inches rain. no rain from June 2 to September 30, then 2.0 inches.
Corinth Baptist Church on Farm Road 1255 near Grand Saline hosts its annual Homecoming September 14 with morning services at 10 and 11 followed by a noon dinner on the grounds. Rev. R P Campbell will speak for both the morning and afternoon programs starting at 1 15 with music from area groups and former residents. Awards will honor the oldest and youngest attendees and notable families while former pastors and church milestones will be recognized. Evening services at 6 30 and 7 15 feature Rev. Henry Crow.
A surprised Tom Hicks was honored Friday with a birthday cake and luggage piece presented by Bobby Martin Judy Parker Ozelle Martin Marion and Lois Quinn Ben Hamblen and W O Blackburn. The group sang and joined him for cake and coffee at the Russell Insurance office as he marked his 84th birthday on August 30.
The Wesleyan Service Guild of the First United Methodist Church installed officers on August 31, 1969. Officers are Faynelle Fowler president Katherine Conant vice president Nora McMahon recording secretary Bernice Bates treasurer. Chairmen listed for Spiritual Growth Missionary Education Christian Social Relations Membership Telephone Hospitality Nominations. Monthly meeting set for September 4 at Faynelle Fowler’s home with Georgia Pugh leading a program titled Foundations for Patriotism.
The Grand Saline Riding Club announces a one time change for September 11 meeting to Thursday at the Rodeo Arena. Regular Tuesday night schedule is skipped this month and all members are urged to attend.
Dottie Joslin Carroll, Mrs Ellis, earned a Master of Science in Library Science from East Texas State University Friday night August 22 during summer commencement. She teaches at Grand Saline Elementary School.
