Chamber Reviews Salt Festival Involves Parade and Art Gallery Opening

The Chamber of Commerce board discussed the Salt Festival, the financial report, and their role in parade entries. Davis noted a possible accounting of income and expenses to the public as a city affair. The float cost 554.28 with 100 prize reducing to 454.28, and a 75 prize from Debra Heddins helped reduce costs to 379.28. The balance on March 31 was 1228.57, April receipts 1142.20, expenses 1336.52 leaving 1034.25 on April 30. A grand opening for an art gallery at Westward Ho Motor Lodge is set for Thursday June 30 with invitations to be mailed.

Saline opens field house for youths workouts

Coach Bill Hunter announces the field house is open for exercise for youths 13 and older. Equipment is available mornings 8 to 9 and evenings 6 to 8 30 on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays.

Grand Saline Trustees Outline Athletic Program Reforms

The Grand Saline School board voted to hire two new teachers and accept Mariebeth Darby's resignation. They set a 5:30 Thursday special meeting to hire a new band director and opened bids on the building trades class house, accepting Perry Pugh's $30,000 offer. Coach Bill Hunter presented an athletic program plan emphasizing coordinated coaching, community support, and progressive instruction.

Grand Saline Posts 71 May Court Cases

Grand Saline police filed 71 municipal court cases in May led by tickets for drunk in public and driving without a license. Violations included beer and alcohol possession, minor access, marijuana, disorderly conduct, and traffic offenses. Fines totaled 1603 dollars with five auto accidents and one theft case resolved.

Stadium Drive Parking Regulated By Council

The Grand Saline city council passed an ordinance restricting parking on the south side of Stadium Drive near the baseball field and about 50 yards south on Oleander Street to reduce ball game accidents. Signs will mark no parking, and police will enforce.

Van Zandt County Burglaries Reported

Six burglaries were reported in Van Zandt County. Harold Tyner’s residence in Van was entered through an unlocked rear patio door and items including a RCA television and jewelry were taken. J B Goodie’s Van home was entered by kicking the rear door and thieves took silverware, televisions, cameras and several firearms. Joe Chandler of Wills Point reported the theft of two black wrought iron armchairs.
