In Grand Saline on a rainy spell E. L. Gore reports a strange plant that bears both tomato and potato on a single vine. One end shows a tomato fruit while the other end carries a potato tuber and the leaves mix tomato and potato varieties.

Fried Chicken Fundraiser Dinner at Fire Hall

Leaders of the Summer Activity program sponsor a chicken dinner at the Fire Hall on Saturday from 11 to 1. Plate lunches cost 55 cents, sandwiches are available, and meals include fried chicken cream gravy mashed potatoes a salad and iced tea. Proceeds aid the activity fund.

Social Security Moves Office to City Hall

Tom Guy, a field representative for the Social Security office in Tyler, announced during a visit to Grand Saline that the office will relocate from the Fire Hall to City Hall. Public access will be every first Monday from 10 to 12.

Electrical storm wrecks church and home in Grand Saline

A severe electrical storm in Grand Saline caused major damage including a split roof at the First Baptist Church and a smashed louvre. Fire, smoke, and smoke odors followed as residents reported sparks, a fireball striking the church, and structural damage to neighboring homes and a TV plug blown from a wall. Electrical power was knocked out overnight.

Homecoming Planned for Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church

Highways Plan Revealed for Smith County Route

A proposed four lane divided expressway through Smith County was unveiled at an Austin meeting. The route would cross U S 69 near Lindale and run east toward the East Texas oil field, aiming to minimize crossing distance at Kilgore Longview. Officials say the rural route would serve about 75 000 more people and cost less by crossing the oil field at its narrowest point. Robby Williams Earns Membership in National Music Fraternity

Robby Williams son of Mr and Mrs F C Williams of Grand Saline and piano pupil of Harriet Wood of Tyler qualified for membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians He passed the required test and was declared a District winner Elementary Class in the National Piano Auditions held in Tyler on May 18 Suzanne Ener of Mineola posted the highest grade 96 while Robby scored 95 ranking second Enna Krantz of Switzerland served as judge.
