Grand Saline Firemen and their families and the City Council look forward to the 23rd annual Fireman's New Year’s Banquet at the fire hall at 7 p.m. on December 31. Citizens urge extra care for grass fires so firefighters aren’t worn out for the event and suggest delaying Christmas tree fires until rain arrives.
A series of brief portraits highlights local women at businesses and in households. Mary Lou Stephens tips a ready smile at The City Pharmacy as she services customers and raises five children. Adelle Presswood gushes about cattle and farm work. Odessa Joslin charms at Tom Thumb Grocery. Katherine Edwards supports timely chores. Mrs Bogan’s gentle voice on the elementary school line evokes memories.

Joe Tunnell reports the Van bank robbery trial is scheduled for January 16, 1956. A 100 man special venue was called. Mullens and his wife are out on bonds of 10000 and 7500 dollars respectively. Mullens is represented by L L Sanders and C L Stanford while Mrs. Mullens is represented by Clyde Elliott Jr. They also face federal charges with bonds posted in Tyler.
Gordon and Odie Knight have honed their listening to recognize voices and footsteps. After doors close at the Post Office they can greet friends by voice and identify many people by their steps, though shoe changes can momentarily confuse them.
A hospital roll call lists patients in the Corby Germany Hospital at 3 p.m. Wednesday: Mrs J W Germany, Mrs W H Hayes, Mrs F M Williamson, Jesse Body, Mrs J M Watson, J T York, B E Armstrong, Fred Pettier, and Haywood Flowers.
City Council in regular session on Wednesday December 28 appoints Roy Sallings as night watchman replacing Bill Herring who resigned to assist his wife at the Drive In. Foster Land will handle water mains repairs and Leroy Simmons will focus on pumping with J C Gipon as Land’s assistant.
Most business houses that closed for Christmas will close again for New Year’s Day and the day after. Monday January 2 generally will be a holiday as many offices and shops observe the observance.
J M Moody and his wife spent about three months repairing toys for Grand Saline children. They delivered 75 repaired packages to the American Legion on Christmas Eve and work without pay, driven by love for kids. Moody hopes to start earlier next year and even consider a big Christmas tree idea.
The Ground Observer training course is set for Wednesday January 4 at 2 p m. All organizations are urged to send representatives and the public is invited to attend. At the course’s end planes will be sent over Grand Saline for practice identification by observers.
Thelma Stephens was driving home for the holidays when an airplane unexpectedly touched down on the highway ahead. She calmly steered around the plane and continued homeward as if such landings were a normal sight.
Grand Saline held a mammoth Christmas drawing on December 24 with a large crowd. Ralph Slegle and C. A. Mayfield organized the event listing donors, gifts, recipients, and values, from rockers to radios and groceries.
Derrell Kuykendall reports about 50 baskets or certificates for food prepared through efforts of The American Legion The Methodist Church Main Street Baptist Church Odd Fellows Lodge The Rebeccas and the Eastern Star. Legion baskets prepared by Noble Taylor Glenn Jackson Miller Malone Bryan Joslin Alvin Jackson and E W Curnutt. Other baskets and certificates by Wiley Thomas Morris Bolin Marjorie Alexander Carl King and Faye Fowler. The Methodist Church invites families to bring school age children to select clothing at 2 pm January 8. Clothing program sponsored by the Methodist Men s Bible Class.
On New Year’s Day 1956 both formal and informal gatherings are planned with black-eyed peas promised for luck and good eating. A pan of hot cornbread accompanies the dish, signaling comforting, traditional Southern fare.
In a Sept 26 letter Major General K L Berry Texas State Chairman of the March of Dimes congratulated Alf Roberson on being named Van Zandt County Chairman. He noted the 1955 campaign raised over 2 million statewide and 5 881 50 in Van Zandt County for 26 cents per capita. The 1956 drive starts Jan 8 with a 7 pm kick off at the Ranch Motel where Roberson will outline the campaign. Roberson has long served as local chairman and now holds the county post vacated by Joe Tunnell.
Pure Oil Company drilled a dry hole about three miles northwest of Van at No. 1 J H Leonard P Mason survey. Hole plugged at 4750 feet. East of the failure in the Van shallow field Thurman Armstrong No. 10 S E McKenzie a William Daniel survey completed 22 barrels per day from the Nacatoch at 1280-88 feet.
Mrs. J L Renfro of Corsicana mother of R E Renfro manager of Wolens died Dec 18 buried at Blooming Grove on Dec 15 She was 94 born in Mississippi in 1861 at Civil War start came to Blooming Grove Texas in 1892 lived on a farm with her husband almost all their married life Later moved to Corsicana confined to bed six years Survived by six children
Final rites for Lynn Martin a 29 year old Highland resident were conducted at Highland Baptist Church with Rev Ed Barrett and Rev Elmer Parkerson officiating. Burial followed at Highland Cemetery. survivors include wife Betty Martin daughter Debra Martin brothers Wallace and Corell Martin sister Mrs Evelyn Woodson. Pallbearers were cousins Glenn Frank Raymond Arch Ivan and Lloyd.
The Tyler Social Security Office announces January to March 1956 travel changes. Canton moves visits to Tuesdays with Richard B. Harper in Canton Jan 10 Feb 7 March 6 from 10 am to noon. Grand Saline shifts to Tuesdays with Harper Jan 24 Feb 21 March 20 from 10 am to noon. Residents urged to write first to Tyler to speed contacts.
Christmas afternoon traffic on Highway 80 between Dallas and Grand Saline was heavy with 20389 west bound cars. No traffic violations were observed and the crowd moved in orderly fashion.
