A play titled A Perplexing Situation TM was staged by the debating society at the Palace Centre Thursday evening with full attendance. Miss Evelyn all directed elocution and Jas Hall received credit for the production while the high school orchestra under Miss Lanta provided music.
Three Millsdore saloon keepers James Feit Tobn Haumschild and John Haesl were brought to town Friday and charged with keeping their establishments open on Sunday. Judge Calkins fined each $15 plus costs, and they returned home realizing Sunday business isn’t all gleaming.
An automobile owned by Frans Pelot of Port Edwards turned over on Monday along the main highway near the south side. Pelot’s young daughter was painfully injured. Ice on the road caused the car to skid at a fairly high speed, smashing the vehicle in the mishap.
In December 1917 the Wood County Legal Advisory Board urges residents to complete a questionnaire within seven days. It lists attorneys and associates in Grand Rapids Marshfield and Nekoosa available for aid, and notes the Ragan family funeral in Cadett after an automobile accident injuring J R Ragan and his daughter.
Miss Eunice Lemense and Mr. Basil Barton wed Wednesday at 4 20 PM at the Catholic parsonage Rev Wm Reding officiating. Bridesmaid Harriet Barton and groomsman Leonard Lemense attended. The couple, with ties to this city and Biron, plan to reside there after teaching and employment roles.
A Wisconsin man bought a $11.33 trial order from a Chicago wholesale grocery ad selling to consumers. Ten days later no goods arrived. a due bill and delayed shipping followed, and the company credited the order without delivering flour and sugar. He paid express charges and found local prices cheaper, labeling the outfit a scam targeting unwary shoppers.
In the city many people helping applicants fill questionnaires report most claim exemption from the draft. Reasons include farming duties and dependents relying on their support. Some youths living at home fear old folks would suffer without them. Some discover new farming status to aid France, while others worry about family welfare if drafted. Government may exempt some, but exemption decisions lie with the exemption board. Timing for the next draft is unclear with reports of February or later due to equipment and readiness, though officials aim to move quickly.
William Hall Walker philanthropy and Eastman Kodak stockholder leaves most of his estate to charitable and educational institutions. Residue in trust for widow Gertrude D Walker and income from 700 Kodak shares. Estate at Great Barrington goes to widow with $15000 set for maintenance. Walker died in New York on Thanksgiving. Hancock woman is daughter of F R Jones, sister of Walker's first wife. Chippewa county board votes $3000 to Red Cross. Portage $500 and Juneau $200 to same. Juneau also aids Y M C A with $200.
Madison on December 24 reports Wisconsin residents over subscribed Liberty Bonds and now face direct federal income tax. Collector Burt Williams says tax blanks will be mailed after New Year with deputies in counties to assist filers, noting new exemptions of 1000 and 2000 and stressing mandatory returns for many workers.
Stevens Point Journal notes humor in a wartime draft interview. Bob Morse, a legal advisory board member, asks a registrant about children and occupations. The man jokes his three month old baby eats and sleeps, prompting Morse to settle tricky points for the puzzled board.
Washington chatter puts a February 1 draft call on the table though not confirmed by official sources. It is believed 60 days will pass after questionnaires are in before proper classification and cantonment plans for the 35 percent of the first draft are ready. Enlistments rise to fill army and navy ranks, with men choosing assignments, while bands from Merrill herald and the 127th Infantry unite at Camp MacArthur. Delbert Bliss, son of Prof Bliss, earns honor as first clarinetist in the new combined band.

Miss Irma O'Cain and Robert Weeks married at the bride’s parents home with Rev C C Becker of the Methodist church officiating. A wedding dinner followed for immediate relatives. Both are well known in the city. the bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lewis O'Cain and the groom is the son of Mr and Mrs R A Weeks. They will reside in his city.
Commencement exercises for Riverview hospital were held at the Elk club with a good crowd. Father Reding gave the invocation, Mrs. Ruby Dewey sang, Dr. Harper delivered the address on “How to Keep we,” diplomas were awarded, Mrs. Dewey sang again, and Rev. R. J. Locke gave the benediction. Graduates were Stella Leland and Marte Richer.
City canvassers for the Red Crest bylve report widespread success with many families achieving one hundred percent membership. The effort is drawing greater public interest as more residents understand the order's work and engage more actively than at the outset.
The Vesper Wood Manufacturion company has reorganized and renamed as the Vesper Silo and Tank company. It will now focus on manufacturing silos and stock tanks. George Horn serves as president, E C Bennett as vice president, and Dave Dowdru as secretary and treasurer.
The city’s lawyers have been the busiest this past week assisting many residents in completing questionnaires. Some forms are intricate and require time even with legal aid or other competent help.
A new law, effective after June 1, requires publishing the names of all license applicants. The certificate, application, and license blanks are in triplicate, with more questions to answer than before. Blanks are already with the county clerk.
Chief of Police KR. 5 Paynes occupies new quarters in city hall. The building is complete and will be in use once furniture is in place, replacing the need to carry records in inner coat pockets.
The cases against farmers who subscribed for stock in the Wau sau Packing plant were tried in Clark county circuit court last week and decided against the farmers. It is probable that other pending cases in this matter will be settled without going to court.
The Wood County Telephone Company moved to a new building last week and has settled in. A new switchboard is being installed with a mag from the factory, and completion is expected about four months.
City Treasurer Louis Schall reports readiness to collect taxes over the next two weeks. He will be at the Joan Whelr store before moving to the new city hall on the west side, and will be located in the treasurer's office thereafter.
The Home Guards will drill tonight December 27 in the amusement hall with a large turnout expected and space for new members. Mr and Mrs Hol Daly of St Paul are visiting Mrs Elizabeth Daly over the holidays.
