Louis B Nagler former assistant secretary of State was sentenced to thirty months in Leavenworth by Judge King after conviction at Milwaukee last week for violating the Espionage Act Nagler refused bail of 7500 pending appeal to the Supreme Court Judge John M Becker of Monroe received three years in Leavenworth for Espionage Act violations with bail fixed at 10000 and twenty days to file an appeal Flo was convicted at Hall Clive last week for disloyal remarks about the war
Rudolph resident Ferman Young reported his parked Ford missing Friday afternoon. Chief Payne tracked a suspect by sending postal cards, locating the car and Josie Baker in Mankato. Sheriff Normington and Herman Young retrieved the vehicle, Baker later implicated.
Government agent Miss Mary Carrol sets regular office hours at the Council of Defense rooms on Monday from ten to twelve and two to four, and Saturday from ten to twelve. She helps housekeepers save food through efficient canning and cooking methods with demonstrations and shared experiences. Call to arrange or request a home visit if desired.
Pittsville record reports Pittsville couple Reec Brown and Edna May Hiles wed at Geo W Brown home with groom’s father as justice of the peace. Attendants were Lillian Brown and Willie Haumehild. After a wedding supper, the pair departed for Grand Rapids and planned to reside at the Geo W Brown residence. The groom works with Brown Bros cement contracting and farm duties. The bride is the daughter of George and Mrs Hiles of Dexterville, a well known local girl.
Junction City experienced an attempted robbery Monday night when unknown parties tried to loot the bank. Electric alarms woke the cashier and the robbers fled by car. another group, possibly the same trio, allegedly escaped with about six hundred dollars after using nitroglycerine to blast the vault.
Marshfield boosters highlighted the Wood County fair with a Tuesday citywide parade by the band and several advertising cars. Grand Rapids day is set for Thursday September. Waupaca raised $17 at last week’s payment dance, and organizers hope for three times that amount from the local crowd.

A. T. Thompson, city engineer, learned on Tuesday that his brother Maryin T. Thompson a First Lieutenant in the 123d Infantry was killed in action July 15 in France. Lieutenant Thompson, 21, received his commission at the first training camp at Fort Sheridan and was sent to France last fall. Friends of A. T. Thompson mourn his loss.
The Women's Council of Defense plans an inaugural recreation week last week in August to provide constructive leisure. A. F. Hotchkiss of Oshkosh toured Grand Rapids, praised local swimming and schools, and urged developing organized play with tennis, gardens, and baseball on Lincoln school grounds.
Laura Padgham longtime city resident died August 7 at her daughter’s home in Portland Oregon after living there ten years. Survived by three children J A Stelle of Portland Ora Ired Padgham of Port Edwards and Harry Padgham of Beloit a brother Joel Tennant of Hartley Iowa and sisters Carrie Hollenstein Gordon Neb and Emily Holt Los Angeles Cal. Laying to rest occurred in Portland Oregon.
Miss Signe Seger daughter of Mr and Mrs Axel Seger of this city wed Mr William Berard of Wausau on Saturday afternoon. Miss Ida Seger and Mr Harold F Heath attended. Father Owen performed the ceremony. A wedding supper followed at the bride's parents home and the couple left for Grand Rapids in their car. They will reside on Mr Berard s farm near Wausau.
Miss Mary Louise Holmes former director of the Domestic Science Department in city public schools marries Harry Clarkson Ewens of Columbus Ohio on August 8. Mrs Ewens taught cookery in day and evening courses and was popular in schools and in town. She was active in the Methodist church. Friends extend best wishes.

Mr and Mrs H I Weiland entertained forty five guests at a Monday bridge party for the local Red Cross association. Mrs J T Reinhart won high score with Mrs L Mathis and Mrs Henry Demnitt taking second and third. Thrift stumps were given, eight dollars was raised, and light refreshments followed.

Walter Stamm oldest son of Mr and Mrs Stamm of this city was reported missing in action after serving with the marines on the Western front on July 19. A telegram from the war department notified his parents Monday night and the next morning a letter from the YMCA secretary said he had been taken to a Red Cross Base hospital slightly wounded. Mrs Harold Arpin and two sons returned to Duluth on Tuesday, accompanied by Mrs EB Arpin.
Labor Day will be observed with no morning events and a band program at the pavilion. Activities start after dinner and continue into the night with coffee and ice cream served. most factories plan to close for the day.
The piente and chicken chowder by the band boys on Sunday at Bear Like was a Die success. The trip Wes nade tp autoes and the boys ar rived at the lake at nine o'clock. At one o'clock a fine chicken chowder was served and at 2:30 the boys played an hours concert enjoyed by a large number of wie farmers. Supper at five, then more selections before they departed.
Messrs. Geo N Wood J 8 Thompson Chas Monk and Mr Sherman were in Valley on business and attended the Indian pow wow there. Over 400 Indians attended from Nebraska Iowa and Wisconsin driving large touring cars. Proceeds benefited the Red Cross with 50 cent admission.
Rhinelander shows Rhinelander New North-Will Lee, formerly of Oklahoma, buying a large tract near Conover to raise cattle. An Indian and former Juanda holder, he sold his Oklahoma holdings as a government ward for 850000, aiming to establish a major ranch in Upper Wisconsin with strong cattle stock prospects.
Mr and Mrs Julius Matthews of Sigel received word on Thursday that their son Private Ernest Matthews had been severely wounded in France. Ernest enlisted in the Marshfield Co a year ago while employed by Louis Trossen manager of Marshfield Hdwe Co. A brother Leon in the Aviation corps at Camp Dorfield Arcadia Florida is home on a ninety day furlough to help harvest the crops.
Mr and Mrs Wm Nash learn their son Edward Nash enlisted and went to France with a local cavalry troop. He sustained a broken leg from an accident and, as reported, was not in the trenches and was convalescing favorably.
The City of Grand Rapids offers free vaccinations to residents next Monday August 28 between 2 and 4 PM at the new City Mall. This last chance to be vaccinated before school resumes is emphasized as essential for attendance.
