The Graham high school football team defeated Decatur 6 to 0 on Saturday. A 20 yard interception return for a touchdown was the lone score as the locals build momentum with two wins and a forfeited game. Electra looms as a strong next test, Burkburnett visits Graham October 20.
The Chautauqua Club met with fourteen members and Mrs. T. M. Binnion presiding. Each member donated a book to the library and explained her choice during roll call. A lengthy meeting followed the minutes, a thanks given to Mr. J. R. Ramsey for ice team sale donation, and to Mr. and Mrs. Morrison for hosting the teachers reception. President Mrs. Z. A. Hudson spoke on Virginia in the Building of the Nation, with a round table led by Mrs. Milton Snoddy. The next meeting is set for November 14 with Mrs. D. H. Bolin.
The Wednesday Club met at the Henley Apartments on West Second with Mrs Glenn Dyer hosting. Prizes awarded included a hand embroidered lunch cloth to Mrs W E Ashford and an embroidered linen bridge cover to Mrs W Z Allen. Mrs Harold Hubbard won a hand embroidered guest towel.
Mrs Dye and her family traveled to Graford after a message said Mrs Brown suffered painful injuries. They returned Sunday as she was resting and somewhat better.
After a new amendment allowing the legislature to meet on its own call, Governor Walton has summoned a session for October 11 to pass an anti klan law. He pledges resignation if the bill is paid, while lawmakers push to review his official acts and consider impeachment.
The Retail Merchants Association of Graham reports a large turnout for a free prize distribution offering 3750.00 in prizes, with winners including J. M. Roberts Cedar Creek 250 dollars and Miss Hattie Cambern Graham 100 dollars. A new 750.00 prize event is scheduled for November 17, with expectations of the largest crowd yet.
Mrs L E Norman hosted a Friday birthday party for her daughter Lucile at her South Oak Street home. Guests from Lucile's Sunday School joined for games and a dinner of fried chicken and salads. Afterward the group attended the Rex Theatre to see Lawful Larceny and serenaded chaperoned by Mr and Mrs William Stepp.
W F Robinson and J E Robinson plus Padgett W P Robinson and others from Wichita Falls, Jean, and nearby relatives attended the funeral of Mr M Robinson who died early Sunday from a pistol shot received in Jean Saturday afternoon.
Steve Magee 37 of Electra died Sunday after the timber-laden truck he drove overturned near Olney. He was found by two passing youths and asked them to lift the weight off him but collapsed from a hemorrhage once freed. Magee, a drilling contractor with brothers B V and R B Magee, is survived by a wife, a 13 year old daughter, and two brothers. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Electra.
Mr A B Eddleman director of the live stock division says stock men are filing applications for the upcoming Young County Fair to be held November 8 9 and 10 All entries across departments must be filed by November 8 J G Crow lists a Hereford bull and calf and two pigs J C Butler lists a Jersey bull and two Jersey cows Eddleman expects many more entries in the final days
The Graham Music Club met at First Methodist Church for its first regular gathering, with roll rally remarks on German music and a German school discussion by Mrs. Simpson. Members performed piano solos and vocal numbers, ended by Mrs. Lovelace with violin, under Mrs. Duncan's program leadership.
Mrs A A Kaberle and her son Jack from Chicago visit the city as guests of Mrs J C Bower. Mr Kaberle previously served as ticket agent for the Rock Island in this city.
Mr A W Kay came back Sunday from Battle Creek Michigan after a serious operation and other minor procedures He improves slowly and may be months away from active community work Mrs Kay also returned last week Kay has long served on many committees and aided the town Friends wish him a speedy recovery and good health for Mrs Kay
Dr. C R Taylor pastor of Graham Baptist church attended a meeting in Dallas on Tuesday.
The Graham city paving project advances with concrete pouring this week on extended square paving. Work around the square including a 25 foot strip near the courtyard fence proceeds, with a 50 foot graveled separation. Elm Street paving from the square to First Street and to the union station is also planned. Fourth Street from the square to Salt Creek bridge has been graveled, marking a major improvement in road conditions.
In Graham this week Mr Williann shows two white faced Hereford calves joined at the hips. They are mounted by a taxidermist, appeared life like, born nearly two years ago, lacking one hind leg, and will tour fairs and shows as a curious exhibit.
The Rev. Frank H. Stedman of Cisco met with Arch Deacon Harry L. Virden of Dallas to discuss improvements at the Graham Episcopal church. Material work is planned and weekly services are expected to begin, with the public invited. Rev. Stedman will be in Graham Sunday October 28 for morning and evening services.
Members of the Ist district of State Federation of Women's Clubs must submit short story essay or poetry manuscripts to the literary chairman by November 1. Manuscripts capped at 2000 words and typed single sided. Mrs. Buchanan offers a $10 prize for best club constitution.
Mr and Mrs Carroll Dickenson visited Mr and Mrs Preston Dicken son in Stephens County on Sunday.
Crude oil prices jump as Humble Oil & Refining Company sets new posted rates with 99 gravity at 1.50 a barrel, up nearly 50 percent, signaling broader increases to follow by the Texas Company and others. The move ends a market lull and promises to alter regional conditions across grades from 30 gravity to 39 and above, with varied per-barrel prices.
The shooting of M C Robinson, a prominent oil man, in his pasture near Jean last Saturday led to his death after an ambulance carried him to a local hospital. His son Jim Robinson was charged and jailed, with an examining trial held before Judge W H Reeves. Evidence showed family dispute over divorce and property as context, with multiple relatives involved at the scene. Mrs Crump and daughter returned to visit, while Mrs Fox Clarke drew a large audience with a reading at the Baptist Church. Nat Price and wife spent the weekend in Cisco visiting Mrs McCarver.
Workmen prepared Gra ham grounds for the Young County Fair to be held November 8 9 and 10. A big parade on Educational Day will feature free fair tickets for teachers and schoolchildren. Superintendent H H Avants leads the educational program with aims to draw all county students.
Miss Catherine Craig, soon to wed Mr. Weatherford Touchstone of Dallas, was honored at a mixed shower by Misses Zella and Beulah Allen. Six bridge tables were enjoyed. Miss Louise Graham won high score, a dresser scarf, and Mrs. Graham Stewart earned a second scarf in the bride’s contest. Guests, gifts, and refreshments were part of the evening.
Mr. R. E. Williams heads a new produce house in the Morrison building on the west side of the square, two doors south of The Leader office. A branch of Witherspoon Produce Company of Wichita Falls, Williams has operated in the territory for about two months and now opens a shop offering apples, oranges, lemons, and other seasonable fruit.
Miss Odessa Long will begin her school at Center Ridge on Monday while Mr. G E Newell of Eliasville was in the city Tuesday.
