Foreign buyers are in the United States paying high prices for pecans on the trees in Young County. The season promises a top crop with trees loaded and some pecans offered at ten cents a pound on the trees. Owners may net about two hundred dollars per tree, and demand is expected to rise as the pecan supply remains limited.
Mrs. S. R. Crawford received a message from Fort Worth informing of the serious illness of Mr. Crawford who was there on business. Mrs. Crawford and Mr. B. R. Jeffry went to Fort Worth to be with him and may bring him home tonight if able. A later message stated his condition was improved.
J. P. Hamilton of the Graham telephone Co. displayed a bears claw on the street this week. The claw was sent by Joe Lyda Flin from Oregon, drawing numerous guesses about its origin and purpose.
Mr Lee Alley and Miss Maud McCumber were married at the Dolman House last Sunday night at 12 o clock. Rev B F Stallings of the First Christian Church performed the ceremony after being awakened by the train arrival from Jacksboro. The couple returned to Jacksboro on the 6 30 train Monday morning.
The Gra ham Light & Supply Company renewal was approved to provide 24 hour service with the city taking 25 lights for twelve months. A new plant will be built north of Mountain side Hotel and operating by November 1. Rates are 15 cents per kilowatt for businesses and 20 cents for residences. city lights on a flat rate. North Elm Street likely to be lit from the square to the depot.
The fourth quarterly conference will be held at the Methodist Church next Sunday. Dr. Campbell the Presiding Elder will preach. All who can come are cordially invited. J. Hal Bowman.
E C Stovall warns against pecan gathering on land along the Clear Fork and Brazos rivers at South Bend. He states contracts are in place with others to monitor the area and promises full legal action if anyone is caught.
W. F. French of Zine Arkansas arrived for a visit with his father J. M. French and is prospecting with the aim of locating in the area.
J. M. Atchison of the north farm reports a fair trial of cotton seed from the State Agricultural Department. On about one-sixth of an acre the crop suggests it could yield a bale per acre in dry years, with staple between ordinary and long. He plans to gin and save seed for next year.
A reader thanks Mrs. W. J. Tidwell for twelve colored Zenias from her yard, praising attractive homes and urging more flower displays. R. C. Reeves returns from New Mexico health visit with anecdotes of costly hunting, and Jim Crenshaw is found guilty of selling liquor in a prohibition district with a $25 fine and 60 days in jail, bond set at $300 and awaiting a new-trial ruling.
Splendid showers in northern and northwestern Young County improve ground for fall plowing and wheat. five foot rise in Salt Creek indicates heavier rain in the region. Malcolm Kramer reports sectional wet conditions. Cotton damage minimal. outlook favorable for fall work. Oak Grove Cemetery may see revived efforts as Mrs. M S Crawford is asked to lead the Ladies Cemetery Association with city council and commissioners court backing.
Judge C. W. Johnson of this city spoke at the state Republican rally in Fort Worth last Monday night. He is described as a splendid speaker and a longtime prominent figure in Texas politics.
Manager J. T. Vaughan opened the picture show season at the Graham Opera House to a fair sized crowd last Monday night. The film program will run through the winter except Wednesdays and during other Opera House attractions. Bruce C. Gibson operates the show and is presenting fine pictures. The projection machine has been overhauled and is now as good as new.
Judge Fry, after a short stay at his western county farm, returns to the city encouraged by crop prospects. He gathered some cotton but offers no proof or sample of the yield. Thomas Tyson of Ansonville NC visits his sister Mrs S E Prichard four miles east of town. Tyson, aged 71, Civil War veteran, in feeble health, plans to visit relatives in Sherman Waco and Milam County.
W A Thompson, a well known local farmer and friend of the Leader, visited yesterday to renew his subscription. He moved here five years ago, bought fine land with a payment and has since paid it out while raising feed through the tough years.
