Cattle Industry in Young and Adjoining Counties
Wiloth Watson notes in 1876 there were few white residents in Young Archer Eastland and Wichita counties yet cattle kept settlers income with vast grass ranges. Free range led to fencing, brand disputes, and cattle thieves, spurring the Cattle Raisers Association of Texas founded in Graham on February 15 1877. The group grew, organized districts, and later sent inspectors at shipping points, aiding Texas cattle trade. Fencing changed cattle breeds away from longhorn Spanish stock toward larger beef cattle. barbed wire improved farming though some calf losses remained. Railroads and wells reduced long drives as ranching modernized, with pioneers fondly recalling early trials.
