Ex Gov James E Ferguson speaks under How It Happened urging readers to consider the election backlash against a female governor and noting anti mask laws, Ku Klux references, and pledged support from 275000 friends in a campaign backed by money and fanaticism.
City Marshal J W Davis received word a Chevrolet touring car was stolen from in front of a moving picture show in Mineral Wells. Night Police C Y McDonald arrested the suspect within three hours at the Broadway Cafe and jailed him at the county jail. the man gave the name Lemmons, while Palo Pinto officers said his name was Montgomery. The stolen vehicle belonged to Mr Weaver of Mineral Wells.
Tom Calvin searched for his missing canary for days and found the bird inside a snake he killed in his house. The bird was dead and could not sing, leaving friends to wonder how the reptile entered the home. The Leader leaves the question open for Tom and his friends to settle.
Miss Ethel Fulton returns to Breckenridge after a pleasant visit with Mrs Raymond Leslie.
Attorney General Dan Moody released a statement asserting Governor Miriam A Ferguson’s pledge to resign by November 1 does not meet the Sulphur Springs challenge. He says he cannot compel compliance and that only the people can decide how the ballot box express will be honored.
County Agent W C Hale will take three stock judging contest boys and several others to College Station for the A and M Short Course. Miss Grimes will accompany her clubs. The trip follows a late spring start and the county plans a later report on the little red pigs funded by the chamber of commerce with twenty five Duroe Jersey gifts in April.
Bettie Joe McKenney daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paschal McKenney died in Tulsa Texas on July 20 at age 9 months 28 days. Funeral services were led by Rev. Draper Baptist pastor with Rev. Hinderlight Presbyterian assisting. Burial took place in Silverton Cemetery. She was granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. McKenney. The family had moved to Tulsa from there a few years ago.
The county held a Republican primary last Saturday but turnout was very light with only five votes cast in Graham and few polling places reporting. Officials explain the election was required by law after a strong gubernatorial vote two years earlier.
An error in last week's Leader misidentified the venue for county agricultural clubs guests. The correct venue was Liberty Theatre, not National Theatre, and the correction is issued to set the record straight.
With 767,799 votes counted in the Texas Democratic primary, Dan Moody trails a majority by about 760 votes as 248 counties report. Early tallies show Moody leading Ferguson and Davidson while other state races list Allred, Ball, Bennett, Bolin and Terrell among top finishers. complete returns were not yet received from several counties.
Mr and Mrs W F Johnson Mr and Mrs A L Shahan and Max Wallace left this week for a trip to Oklahoma.
Governor Miriam A Ferguson issues a call for a September 18 1926 special session at the State Capitol Austin to validate bonds and securities questioned by courts and to cure issuance defects. The session may also include department investigations and any other subjects the Governor submits.
Governor Ferguson vows to resign if Moody gains a single primary vote and Moody accepts the wager that Ferguson will resign if she wins by 25 000 votes. The standoff centers on the July 24 primaries and the potential January 1927 exit.
Miss Norfleet Grimes held a biscuit contest at the chamber of commerce rooms on the east square. Mrs. R L Henderson of Tonk Valley won first place with biscuits baked at home. Second went to Mrs. Earl Wheat of Red Top and third to Mrs. Seth Choate of Tonk Valley. Proceeds fund trips to College Station for the Short Course and county clubs plan to send representatives.
Mrs W O Wood entertained with a bridge party at her Virginia Street home honoring Miss Bernice Wood of Greenville Texas and Mr Charles Wood formerly of Dallas Mr Murphy won high score and Miss Rose Amra Reed received consolation Refreshments included cream and cake Guests were invited to reconvene at Shawnee Park for late night festivities ending in the early morning with watermelons and feasting
Banner lists speakers Lillian Massegee Bruce Long Lucille Walker Rufus Bryant George Bla Ruth Denson and Ruth Denson for a Geograpy Jerusalem theme with scriptural readings and remarks. attendees are urged to come and hear talks on Jesus in Jerusalem and remarkable events by local presenters.
Nearly one hundred women and girls from the county clubs attended the event in the chamber of commerce rooms. Fifty-six entered, fifty-four wore costumes, judged by Viola McKenzie. Pauline Choate won Tank Valley first and will represent the county at the A and M College short course from August 2 to 7. All first-place winners advance to state competition.
An abundant rain pattern continues with totals of 0.55 inch Friday 2 inches Sunday and 2.34 inches Monday adding to nearly five inches since the last issue. Crops look good and hope rests on fair weather for cotton and threshing wickets. Ground moisture is ample and stock tanks are full. Vegetables and melons prosper with rain prospects for fall gardens.
P C Walker and family returned Tuesday night from Galveston after visiting McKinney where Mr Walker attended the Texas Baby Chick Association meeting on July 19 and 20. The group promotes better chicks and has annual dues of 10 dollars. Records show about 50 members and over 200 hatcheries in Texas.
