Death of Major General Frederick Funston in San Antonio

Major General Frederick Funston died suddenly on Monday in San Antonio from heart arterial hardening. His body was sent to San Francisco for interment beside his eldest son at the Presidio military cemetery. Funston, a Kansas native, commanded the largest American troop presence since the Civil War and led notable actions in the Spanish American War including the capture of Aguinaldo. He became a general in 1914 at Vera Cruz and led the Southern Department for years. Pershing is slated to succeed him.

Pope Allen Dies at Home Near Elbert

Word reached Throckmorton that Pope Allen died Tuesday night at his Elbert area home after months of paralysis. Son of D and Mrs Allen, longtime Elbert settlers, he joined the Methodist church two years ago. Burial was at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Population figures on military strength in case of war

Figures issued in New York last week show nearly 18 million men could be drafted at once. There are 21,071,076 men aged eighteen to forty five, with 17,606,000 fit for service in extreme need. The standing army totals 105,993 officers and men.

Local visitors report pneumonia recoveries in town

Esq. W. J. Hughes from Eliasville said I. S. Lacey is recovering from pneumonia and now able to be up part of the time. Mrs. Golden, previously dangerously ill with pneumonia, is also recovering. Hughes came with G. W. Pratt and Jack Grane thany.

Rabbit scalp bounty halted by county funds

The county judge announces no more bounty payments for scalps after the second Monday in March due to funds constraints, awaiting state appropriation likely in May or June. Also, a new gas well near Willow Pond south of Mineral Wells yielded gas at about 1000 feet with an estimated flow of 10,000,000 cubic feet daily, Graford Herald reports.

Baptist Ladies Meet For Thursday Church Session

The Baptist ladies gathered Thursday at 3 o'clock. Mrs Jeffery led a scriptural lesson on Building for the Kingdom from the 4th chapter of John. Mrs Southall conducted an study from Royal Service with topics on training school development and church growth. Eighteen ladies answered roll call with religious news items.

Tom Fitzgerald Found Dead In Mount Pleasant Area

The nineteen year old Tom Fitzgerald was found dead with a gunshot wound in a plum thicket near Brazos River. His horse was at the lot gate and a search party recovered the body. Fuller Dozier, a neighbor boy, was arrested and jailed after an examining trial before Squire Brewton.

Gas Well on Holt Ranch to Resume Drilling

The Holt ranch gas well production is estimated at 7,000,000 feet. Operators abandon new-well plans and resume drilling using an eight-inch pipe inside the ten-inch casing to control gas supply while pursuing oil at a reasonable depth.

Gas well on Holt ranch shows stronger second flow

The Graford Herald reports revised gas well facts on the Holt ranch. After installing an eight inch casing and closing the initial flow, drillers continued for days and hit a second, stronger gas flow. They estimate the first flow at two million feet and the second at more than twice that amount.

Camp-Fire Hike Yields Snake Sighting In Shawnee Outing

Shawnee Camp Fire girls joined by guardian Miss Agnes Craig honorary member Mr Moss and guest Miss Flannigan spent a Saturday hike exploring hills and caves. The highlight was Miss Flannigan discovering and shooting a large snake while the group later headed home after their picnic.
