J. V. Stone, long time Stephens county resident, died at his home near Ivan last Monday night. He came to the country in 1876 and settled on his final place. A Primitive Baptist church member, he was highly esteemed in his community.
Friday January 28 closed the fifth month of Graham Public Schools. Superintendent reports an enrollment of 519, a figure 18 higher than any full term in school history. Teachers plan special work with patron inspection at the close of the session. Teachers invite friends to visit the display rooms often.
Jno Dowdle accepted a position with the Jno E Morkon Company as clerk in the grocery department. His hiring expands the firm’s local staff and reflects ongoing employment in the retail sector.
Graham theater announces contracting two top road troupes Tempest and Sunshine Company on 15th and College Boy Company on February 15th. A third act may visit later in the month with more fine entertainments expected before the season ends. Fans are urged to read the Tempest and Sunshine novel to better enjoy the performances.
The revival services at the Graham Baptist Church ended last Sunday night with Evangelist F. M. McConnell assisted by singer H. L. Sparks and the church pastor. McConnell delivered strong sermons and the congregation praised the revival and its lasting impact on the community. Sparks was praised as an efficient assistant and choir leader.
A local note recalls Miss Kate Fields as a pleasant caller from yesterday morning, highlighting her courteous manner and warm greeting in the community.
A Stamford and Rock Island Railway conference in Fort Worth discussed extending the Rock Island from Graham to Stamford. H Mudge indicated the project is planned though no start date was set, with officials expressing a favorable impression of the Stamford party and promising contact on progress. The Stamford delegation included Judge Andrews as spokesman and Wade as secretary.
The Matinee Girl musical comedy company performed to a full opera house crowd in Russellville with seventeen young performers delivering strong solos quartets and ensemble numbers. The show received vociferous encores and was praised as one of the best comic operas seen in Russellville in several seasons with handsome costumes highlighted. The attraction is set to appear at the Graham opera house next Thursday night.
A writer urges planting alfalfa peanuts broom corn and more hogs to live better on less money. Farmers should grow a variety of crops as diversification is described as the safe method for any country, with a mixed program promising gains.
The Graham building boom continues as carpenters, scarce for four years, struggle to keep up. Elegant residences for Hudson, Jeffery and Flint near completion, with a two story Odd Fellows building closing in. A. D. Stewart is adding a fine home near the High School, plus cottages in the new east addition. The town sees ongoing improvement and a rising development spirit, making Graham an ideal place to live.
Tax collector reports 2185 poll taxes paid before midnight Monday, up from 1819 the prior year. While county precinct receipts by precinct are not yet available, the figures indicate near full participation by residents, suggesting high voter engagement in Young County.
E E Hall announces this week his candidacy for re election to Justice of the Peace of precinct No 1. The editorial endorses Squire Hall praising his excellent service and urges voters to retain him for another term.
In County Court Hensley Johnson Realty Company versus M D Maples is under advisement by Judge E W Fry who has not yet ruled. In Justice Court J M Watson defeated A H M Anderson at trial by jury. J T Marshall sued J K Miller on note and won by default. State of Texas versus R M Todd J L Yancey and C C Graves suit on bond with plaintiff’s judgment. J B Holder versus G C Nance suit on account set for Tuesday February 7. Young County Lumber Co versus Roy D Golston suit on note compromised.
R K M McCoy called yesterday evening and renewed for the Leader and Dallas News. The note thanks subscribers for paying up and supporting the paper.
